Germany Expands Regional Rail with 113 Advanced Battery Trains

Germany’s Lower Saxony state has commissioned Siemens Mobility to deliver 113 cutting-edge Mireo Plus B battery trains, marking one of the largest regional rail investments in recent history. This order significantly boosts the state’s fleet, shoring up commitments to reduce emissions and modernize public transportation infrastructure.

Major Investment and Project Scope

With an investment close to €1 billion, this fleet expansion encompasses the complete lifecycle support, including the construction of two new maintenance depots, extensive spare parts packages, and comprehensive long-term maintenance agreements. Siemens will handle the maintenance over the next 30 years, ensuring operational reliability and sustainability.

Allocation Details and Deployment Schedule

The majority of the trains, totaling 83 units, will serve the Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft Niedersachsen (LNVG), with the remaining 30 allocated to Regionalbahnfahrzeuge Großraum Braunschweig GmbH. Siemens plans to deliver the first trains by 2026, with full operational deployment targeted between 2031 and late 2031, allowing for a phased introduction across key regional networks.

Technical Features and Capabilities

The Mireo Plus B trains measure approximately 63.5 meters in length, equipped with three carriages, and capable of reaching speeds up to 160 km/h. Fitted with modern amenities, they include wireless internet, accessible features that comply with TSI PRM standards, and versatile bicycle storage to accommodate seasonal demands. Their design emphasizes ease of access via low-platform compatibility at various station types.

Operational Benefits and Route Expansion

Utilizing both overhead electric lines and battery power, these trains will operate on partially electrified routes, eliminating the need for extensive infrastructure upgrades. These hybrid capabilities enable deployment on corridors such as Harz-Heide and Weser-Leine, reducing diesel emissions and helping realize the region’s decarbonization goals.

Enhanced Infrastructure for Maintenance and Charging

In conjunction with adding new trains, Siemens will establish maintenance facilities at Goslar and Soltau. These depots will serve the entire fleet for the next three decades. Electrification infrastructure, such as charging stations at Soltau, will facilitate rapid battery recharging, ensuring trains remain ready for service without extensive downtime.

Comparison with Previous Siemens Orders

This project surpasses Siemens’ earlier contracts, such as the 75-train order for the Saxony region’s S-Bahn network, valued around €500 million. The new deal emphasizes battery technology expansion, illustrating Siemens’ commitment to hybrid solutions and advancing regional mobility solutions.

Regional Network and Service Rollouts

The initial deployment will focus on the Harz-Heide network, serving routes like Braunschweig-Bad Harzburg and Braunschweig-Goslar. By 2031, these routes, along with Weser-Leine, will see electric and battery-powered trains replace older diesel models, aligning with the state’s goal to phase out diesel trains entirely by 2037.

Long-Term Emission Reduction Objectives

Lower Saxony’s strategy aims to significantly cut regional emissions by adopting sustainable propulsion technologies. The battery trains will serve as a transitional solution, providing cleaner alternatives while expanding electrified routes and building the necessary electrical infrastructure.
