Deep Tech Innovation Network Spreading to Europe with De-TECH: Expectations and Results from the Event
The De-TECH: Deep Tech European Venture Builder project offers a roadmap designed to strengthen the deep technology ecosystem in Europe. This journey aims to increase synergy between universities and the private sector and encourage the formation of spin-offs. The project is funded by the EIT Higher Education Initiative and covers a journey that will last 25 months in total. In the process that officially started in January 2025, the consortium, in which Istanbul plays a leading role, triggers a wide event calendar extending to capitals such as Hannover and Madrid. This article examines in detail the aims of the project, its partners and the key moments of the recent final event, showing how new collaborations are taking shape in the deep tech ecosystem.
The final event held in Istanbul brought the strong synergy between Tech Istanbul and IMM to the field. The event was held at Baruhane venue and more than 14 deep tech-focused startups took the stage in front of the jury. Initiatives that were deemed successful as a result of jury evaluations gained visibility in the international arena and had the opportunity to further clarify their solutions in special workshops. This process goes beyond just a competition and represents a concrete step that enables university-private sector collaboration models to reach the field and scale.
Strengthening Deep Tech Collaborations Across Europe: Strategic Goals and Business Model
The De-TECH project aims to commercialize academic knowledge in pioneering fields such as artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, biotechnology and health. The knowledge produced at universities strengthens the bridges between research and enterprise in the first stage; then accelerates commercialization processes through the establishment of spin-offs and market-oriented solutions. This effort contributes to increased entrepreneurial capacity across Europe, the proliferation of high-value collaborations and the transformation of technology transfer into commercial success.
The project scope was initiated with the funding received within the scope of the 2024 Project Call and will be implemented in the field for a total of 25 months. Initial goals include making Istanbul an ecosystem hub, increasing visibility with large-scale events in European centers such as Hannover and Madrid, and increasing interactions at local and European levels. In this way, concrete collaborations and financing models are put forward for scaling initiatives.
The Global Power of the Consortium: Who Is There, How Does It Work?
Consortium partners of the De-TECH project include leading institutions operating in different countries in Europe. These include UPM – Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Spain), ITU (Turkey), Leibniz Universität Hannover (Germany), Estonian Business School (Estonia), Technoport (Luxembourg Technology Incubator), Effectia (Innovation Consultancy Firm – Spain) and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM). This broad base makes it possible to produce multi-layered solutions in the fields of health, biotechnology, artificial intelligence and quantum by bringing together expertise from various disciplines.
While the team that manages the project technically and operationally strengthens the ITU-based Türkiye leg, partners from other countries are also establishing events and networks on a European scale. Thus, university-private sector collaboration patterns are being redefined within the framework of market-oriented R&D models and innovative financing mechanisms.
Istanbul Final: Presentation of 14 Startups and Featured Solutions
At the final event held in Baruhane, 14 deep tech-focused startups from different countries included in the program made detailed presentations before the jury. The focus of the presentations was technology infrastructure, market fit, scalability and operating plan. The jury carefully examined the feasibility and market potential of the innovation; It meticulously evaluated elements such as technical competence, business model validity, and ethical and regulatory compliance.
The startups not only demonstrated their technical excellence; it also offered application focus, scalable business models, and a shareable vision for high-impact results. The prominent criteria in the jury evaluation included market access, financing need, successful road maps and concrete suggestions for partnerships. Successful startups won awards, increasing their visibility and gaining access to financing and mentoring opportunities.
The special workshop held simultaneously with the event enabled selected teams to take concrete steps in the finalization of deep tech solutions. Mutual feedback was shared on prototypes, roadmaps and pilot plans to demonstrate how the solutions fit user needs. These sessions generated valuable ideas on new collaboration models and financing strategies for ecosystem actors.
Future Goals: New Doors for Europe and Türkiye
While the project continues to increase the visibility of the deep tech ecosystem across Europe, it also serves as a critical catalyst for the construction of an innovative ecosystem for Türkiye. The process, which started in Istanbul, enables the increase of collaborations on a European scale by gaining strength with centers such as Hannover and Madrid. In this context, the synergy established between the consortium partners aims to expand international networks, implement innovative financing models and make university-industry transfer work more effectively.
Market access, regulatory compliance, ethical standards and scalability stand out as critical scale factors for the long-term success of startups. The project focuses on establishing a sustainable ecosystem in these areas and strives to close the gap between academic knowledge transfer and commercialization of innovative solutions. It also aims to strengthen the qualified workforce and investment capacity required for Türkiye’s global competitiveness.
Tech Istanbul and Transparent stakeholder Participation: The Heart of the Ecosystem
Tech Istanbul, as one of the central forces in Türkiye of this wide network in Europe, implements its entrepreneurial ecosystem vision at the local level. Cooperation with Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality strengthens the city’s innovation infrastructure and provides sustainable support to the start-up ecosystem. This process builds effective bridges between the university and the private sector and brings together critical resources such as mentorship, financing and market access for young entrepreneurs. Thus, Istanbul’s vision of becoming a global entrepreneurship center becomes clear.
The experience and outputs obtained within the scope of the project will form the basis for new large-scale events and international collaborations in Istanbul in the future. In addition, the necessary guidance and mentoring will be provided to ensure that cooperation models between universities and the private sector adapt to changing market dynamics. Thus, the goal of scaling knowledge-based initiatives and strengthening sustainable innovation turns into concrete steps.
