Def ense technology company AeroVironment announced that it will deploy a counter-UAV (UAV) capability at Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota to lay the groundwork for a potential contribution to the U.S. “Golden Dome for America” project. The company is collaborating with Grand Sky, a commercial UAV, business, and aviation park located at Grand Forks Air Force Base, for this strategic deployment.

Together with Grand Sky, AeroVironment will deploy distributed counter-UAV inner-layer capabilities to provide protection over the airspace surrounding the base. These capabilities will include AeroVironment’s Titan and Titan-SV systems, which are long-range counter-drone detection and identification systems. Using the AV Halo Command software platform to fuse sensor and surveillance data, the systems will provide a single operational picture (situational awareness) of the airspace surrounding the base, even beyond line of sight.

National Defense and Strategic Importance

AeroVironment President and CEO Wahid Nawabi stated that this effort in Grand Forks will lay the groundwork for contributing to the “Golden Dome for America” project, which aims to establish a national missile defense system.

In his statement on the matter, Nawabi emphasized that they are accelerating solutions to protect critical U.S. military facilities and personnel, saying: “To support ‘Golden Dome for America,’ we are deploying technologies that provide Grand Forks Air Force Base with unique situational awareness, while also providing a roadmap to expand point-defense capabilities at critical locations across the country.”

North Dakota Senator John Hoeven noted that the recent attacks on Israel and Ukraine have demonstrated that unmanned aerial vehicles are being used in “new and dangerous ways” in warfare. Hoeven added that the capabilities and partnerships established in the Grand Forks region will enable the U.S. to combat this new threat.

The Foundations of the Partnership and a Broad Range of Solutions

The foundation for this collaboration was laid in March when AeroVironment and Grand Sky signed a memorandum of understanding supporting “Project Ultra,” Senator Hoeven’s $110 million drone and counter-drone initiative.

Additionally, in August, AeroVironment announced a strategic partnership with aerospace and national security firm SNC (Sierra Nevada Corporation) to develop an integrated, open-architecture air and missile defense system capable of supporting the Golden Dome.

The Golden Dome solutions AeroVironment aims to deliver encompass a broad range of capabilities, including passive and active sensors, radio frequency technology, directed energy, kinetic energy, electronic warfare, and cyber solutions. The company states that these systems can neutralize any type of target, ranging from small unmanned aerial vehicles to advanced cruise missiles or other next-generation air threats. These efforts are a key part of the U.S.’s initiative to develop new and cost-effective defense systems to protect its critical infrastructure and military facilities.
