The Ministry of Foreign Affairs published a statement about the results of the EU Leaders Summit held in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, with the participation of the heads of state or government of 27 European Union (EU) member countries.
"The Summit Results emphasize that it is in the strategic interest of the EU to develop a relationship aimed at cooperation and mutual benefit with our country," the statement said.
“The failure to take a concrete decision regarding the recommendations in the Joint Communication on EU-Turkey relations prepared by EU Commission Vice President/EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Borrell and the EU Commission is a serious inconsistency. Linking the Cyprus issue with progress in Türkiye-EU relations will never be accepted by us. The approach that reduces multifaceted Türkiye-EU relations to the Cyprus issue must be abandoned. Such a mentality cannot make a positive and constructive contribution to the Cyprus problem or other regional and global issues. Candidate country Türkiye remains determined for EU membership. However, we reject the selective limitation of our cooperation to certain areas. "We will discuss our dialogue with the EU within the framework of reciprocity, according to the speed, level and scope of the EU's steps towards Turkey in the coming period."
