Death Incident in Menekşe Sahil Park: Investigation Started

An investigation has been launched into the death incident that took place in Menekşe Sahil Park in Fatih District of Küçükçekmece district. During routine checks carried out in the park under the management of IMM Parks, Gardens and Green Areas Department, it was detected that there was a water leak on the ground.

Excavation work started with construction equipment at around 26 on April 2024, 11.30. While the work was continuing, it was determined that at 16.05 on the same day, a family was having a barbecue and picnic at a point in the park close to the work area. Security guards in the park warned the family. The family ignored the warning and continued their picnic. When the security guards were inadequate, IMM Police teams were notified. Police teams came to the park upon notice. The police informed the family that lighting fires in the park was prohibited and asked for the picnic to end. At that time, the family noticed that their 5-year-old girl was missing and asked for help from the police. The searches were concentrated in the mud area 7-8 meters away from the area where the family had a picnic. The 136 centimeter deep puddle that formed in the area where the work was carried out during the day was checked. The missing 5-year-old girl was found in the puddle formed within the excavation. Medical teams were informed. The child received first aid in the ambulance and was taken to the hospital. However, despite all the interventions, he died this morning. While the police and judicial authorities' investigation into the incident continues, the exact cause of death of the child will be revealed with the Forensic Medicine Institute report.

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality also launched an administrative investigation regarding the incident. Statements of the personnel responsible were taken. An investigation was launched into whether security measures were taken around the area where the work was carried out.
