World's First Compressed Natural Gas Carrier Ship Delivered

The world's first compressed natural gas carrier ship was delivered in Qidong city, east China's Jiangsu province, on Saturday morning (March 23). The ship set sail for Indonesia for its maiden voyage.

The ship, which has the capacity to transport 700 thousand cubic meters at a time, will be used to travel between the archipelago that makes up Indonesia and transport compressed natural gas to energy facilities during peak demand periods. The natural gas-powered transport ship is 110 meters long and designed to travel at a speed of 14 knots per hour (1 nautical mile = 1,852 kilometers).

The compressed natural gas carrier ship stores natural gas at normal temperature in pressurized containers. A compressed natural gas carrier, unlike liquefied gas, does not require expensive equipment such as a liquefaction plant and regasification terminal. Shipping compressed natural gas by ship offers a new option for transporting natural gas, as an important part of the natural gas industry chain.

On the other hand, the delivery of the first compressed natural gas carrier ship is expected to help in exploring perspectives and potentials for the future transportation of hydrogen by sea.
