Ali Osman Karahan: “Bursa Should Not Be Caught Unprepared for an Earthquake”

Saadet Party Bursa Provincial Chairman Ali Osman Karahan made a statement on the anniversary of the earthquake that occurred on February 6. In his statement, Mayor Karahan said, "As a country, we were shaken by the pain of the 6 and 2023 magnitude earthquakes that occurred 9 hours apart on February 7,7, 7,6, centered in Kahramanmaraş, which was described as the "Disaster of the Century." These earthquakes; Approximately 14 million people living in the provinces of Adana, Adıyaman, Diyarbakır, Elazığ, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kahramanmaraş, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye and Şanlıurfa were affected and tens of thousands of people lost their lives. "May God have mercy on those who died, especially the relatives of all our citizens in the earthquake zone, and we express our condolences to the relatives of the earthquake victims and the Turkish Nation." he said.

Reminding that according to the recently published Earthquake Zones Map, 75 percent of Bursa is a 1st degree earthquake zone and 25 percent is a 2nd degree earthquake zone, Karahan said, “92 percent of Bursa's population is in the 1st degree earthquake zone. Among the earthquakes that caused damage in Bursa, the most important one was the 1855 magnitude earthquake in 7,2, and one of the most important faults threatening Bursa is the fault in the Sea of Marmara. The city of Bursa could be severely affected by an earthquake that could occur both in the north and south of this fault. There was a severe earthquake in the Sea of Marmara in 1894 and our city was seriously affected by it. "In addition, the earthquake that occurred between Gemlik and Mudanya in 1064, thought to have a magnitude of 10, is one of the important earthquakes that occurred in the past." said.

President Karahan continued his statement as follows:

“According to the research, it has been determined that there may be a severe earthquake over magnitude 100 in Bursa within 7 years. There are many active fault lines around Bursa. All of these faults are active, and most of them are capable of producing an earthquake above 6. The Bursa fault passing under the city can also produce a magnitude 7 earthquake. Istanbul is always talked about as having a high earthquake risk. However, Bursa is much more at risk than Istanbul.

It is known that even in the current situation in Bursa, traffic is chaotic. We don't even want to think about what will happen after the earthquake.

Profitable transformation carried out under the name of urban transformation should be stopped as soon as possible.

By establishing a ground-building relationship, risky buildings should be identified and transformed immediately.

Active fault lines need to be included in Bursa's 100.000 scale development plan.

The 5.000 and 1.000 scale plans should be revised urgently, taking into account the fault lines in the 100.000 scale plans.

Bursa Earthquake Emergency Action Plan should be prepared regarding the severe earthquake we expect in Bursa in the near future. The city should not be caught unprepared for an earthquake.

The trick is not to remove debris from an earthquake, but to take precautions before an earthquake.

The disaster experienced in the earthquake is not the wrath of God, but the lack of foresight of the administrators.

On this occasion, we congratulate the entire Islamic World on the Miraj Kandil, we wish God's mercy to those who lost their lives in the earthquake and all our martyrs, and unity and solidarity for our Nation.
