2 in 1 People Who Apply to the Emergency Department for a Heart Attack Has a Panic Attack!

Üsküdar University Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan evaluated the issue of panic attacks.

Prof. noted that panic attack is the name given to a disease that is defined as panic disorder and is included in the classification books, and the attacks within it. Dr. Tarhan said, “It is defined as a disease characterized by physiological and mental symptoms such as panic attack, palpitations, sweating, tremors, shortness of breath, feeling like you are choking, chest pain and tightness. The person simultaneously feels like he is going to lose his mind and has a fear of death. How does one feel when one loses control of the steering while driving at speed? For a moment he was terrified, thinking 'I'm going to roll over and die'. People with panic disorder feel this feeling during a panic attack. The feeling of losing control.” said.

57 PERCENT OF CASES ARE PANIC DISORDER

Prof. stated that when these attacks occur unexpectedly, it is called panic disorder. Dr. Tarhan continued as follows:

“Now, when a person gets upset about something, there is stress, followed by palpitations and excitement. This is not a panic attack. The reason for this is clear. In panic attack disorder, the person unexpectedly, without any causal connection, even while asleep, wakes up with a panic attack. Doctors call this 'panic attack'. This person wakes up and at that moment he cannot explain the reason, saying 'Why is this happening out of the blue?'... His heart beats, he sweats, he trembles, he feels like he is dying, he feels like he is losing his mind, he feels worse because it is uncertain. And he goes to the emergency room.

57 percent of the cases where panic disorder is applied to the emergency room saying 'I am having a heart attack' and an angiography is performed are found to be healthy. 57 percent is a very high number. They are having unnecessary examinations. It's something that affects medical expenses a lot. People with panic disorder have high health anxiety. He has a constant interest in disease-related issues. If he gets numb somewhere, he goes to a health institution. Anticipatory anxiety occurs. Since constant attacks evoke a feeling of terrible disaster, the person begins to avoid and fear that he will have the attack.”

Prof. explains that since attacks can occur in any environment, people cannot go out alone, cannot go to the bathroom alone, and there are even people who crawl around the house thinking they will have an attack. Dr. Tarhan said, “He cannot walk, he cannot go out alone, there are people who go to his mother when his wife goes to work. There are also agoraphobic panic attacks, fear of open spaces. He cannot take the ferry, the bus, enter the tunnel, or travel. These affect your life very seriously. The person escapes from many functions of life. You know Zeki Müren. It wasn't talked about much at the time, but later it became clear that he didn't want to go out in public because of the panic attack. And it closes to Bodrum. He experiences the terror of that feeling, thinking he is going to have a heart attack. At that time, these diagnoses were not widely known. It was talked about but not very widespread. And then he gets on a stage and then he has an attack.” he said.

Prof. noted that feared situations have an effect on the brain, and that due to the person's false beliefs and excessive strain, the brain takes a position regarding it and begins to give similar reactions by establishing connections with it. Dr. Tarhan said, “In some advanced cases, we invite our own panic attack. It enters a vicious circle. "The more a person thinks, the more he thinks, the more he thinks, the more he thinks." said.

Panic attacks do not occur in children

Prof. also touched upon the issue of panic attacks in children. Dr. Tarhan said, “Children do not have panic attacks. A certain mental level is required for a panic attack. It is necessary to research, but as far as I remember, there is no pediatric panic attack included in the diagnostic books about children. But there are childhood anxiety disorders. In such cases, it falls into a risk group. Therefore, assessing one's health is related to errors of interpretation. In treatment, we try to change thinking habits. These people make the symptom catastrophic. "They are usually people with high intellectual levels." said.

TARHAN: “PANIC ATTACKS OCCUR IN ADOLESCENCE.”

Prof. also gave information about anxiety disorders in children. Dr. Tarhan said, “They live according to their age group. Anxiety disorder between the ages of 0-6 is usually caused by the mother... When the child wakes up in the morning, he looks at his mother's face and understands from his mother's face whether he will have a good day or not. If the mother is comforting, reassuring, and able to establish a bond, the child expects that the day will go well. If there is an earthquake, the child does not look at the television, what will he do? He looks at the mother, he looks at the father. Of course, panic attacks occur in adolescence... It is equivalent to adults, especially over the age of 15. What we call Type C people are dependent people. They are people who are always looking for approval from others. They are people who cannot take their own initiative and make decisions. They have social anxiety, which is very common in teenagers as well. As they say, those who are called low self-confidence are silent, they take the food out of their mouth... They always throw it in. Not enterprising, not aggressive, not self-confident. Such people always want to live dependent on someone. "If the addiction cannot satisfy the need, panic attacks, anxiety disorders and various health concerns may occur." he informed.
