Izmir Metropolitan Municipality opened a national architectural project competition to establish Turkey's first sustainability center. The deadline for application and project submission is 17 July. Applications can be made until 17 July 2023. 1 projects to be selected among the 8st Tier Projects will be announced on October 2, 26, after the 2023nd Tier Jury Evaluation. The first selected project in the competition will receive 700 thousand TL, the second selected project 600 thousand, and the third selected project 400 thousand TL. An honorable mention of 100 thousand TL will be given to the five projects selected in the competition.

Common space for sustainable solutions

The Izmir Sustainability Center, which will be implemented within the scope of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, Energy and Climate Action Plan and Green City Action Plan, will be a zero carbon structure and will be designed with innovative solutions. Universities, academics, non-governmental organizations and citizens will benefit from the center where the city's sustainability strategies, policies and projects will be produced. The Center will play an active role in accelerating the transition to a zero-emission environment, promoting and disseminating urban solution practices in the field of sustainability.

National Competition

The competition opened in line with the Regulation on Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, Urban Design Projects, City and Regional Planning and Fine Art Works, pursuant to Articles 4734 and 23 of the Public Procurement Law No. 53, will be a national, two-stage, free, architectural project competition. Within the scope of the project, it is aimed to encourage creative projects and authors who observe the sustainability approach throughout their life cycle, can realize the zero carbon structure target based on data and performance, prioritize climate flexibility and adaptation, and put forward a circular, cost-effective, innovative environmental and architectural understanding.

Conditions of participation

Those who will participate in the competition must be members of the chambers affiliated to the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects and must not be banned from the profession. Again, it is required that those who will participate in the competition are not among those who determine and appoint the jury members and rapporteurs, and the first degree relatives, partners, assistants and employees of the jury members and reporters. Those who receive specifications in the competition, where those who are not present will apply, will hand-deliver their 1st Tier Projects until 4734 on July 4735.

Participatory management approach

For the project that will unite all the actors of the city in the goal of sustainability, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality organized an Exploration Workshop with a participatory management approach.
