Minister of National Education Mahmut Özer and Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy made statements about the latest developments in the region at the Fire Brigade AFAD Coordination Center in Malatya.

In his statement, Minister of National Education Mahmut Özer stated that the basic processes in Malatya continue successfully and said, “Our aim is to ensure that our citizens are transported to solid buildings and container cities. Indeed, Malatya has progressed very quickly in this context.” said.

Noting that the studies on urban planning of more than 10 thousand containers have been finalized, Minister Özer said that the first 110 container cities have started to serve the citizens of Malatya. On the other hand, Ozer; Noting that all public buildings for which a sound report was given by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, civil servants and employees passed, he stated that this situation is the first example of the transition to solid buildings. Özer said, “Our request; To ensure the rapid passage of our citizens to all buildings whose damage has been determined by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and for which a sound report has been given, and to bring the normal flow of life back to life as soon as possible.” he said.

Referring to the latest developments regarding the Ministry of National Education in the provinces affected by the earthquake, Minister Özer continued as follows: “We have 10 million 3 thousand 784 students in these 411 provinces. 212 thousand 992 teachers are assigned. We have explained the decisions we have taken before. In other words, attendance requirement will not be sought in all classes and levels in 10 provinces in the second term. We included tent centers, dormitories and container centers established in 10 provinces within the scope of transportation training. In other words, we will take our students who stay there to our schools free of charge. We'll give them their hot meals and have them carry them back to where they're staying. Again, we have started the process of transporting their children to other provinces, in 71, if the families wish to do so. In this context, we have created enough capacity to transfer these 3 million 784 thousand 411 students in primary, secondary and high schools to 71 cities. So far, 5 students have benefited from this opportunity.”

Reminding that the full scholarship capacity of private education institutions, which was 3 percent, was increased to 10 percent for earthquake victims, Minister Özer stated that 110 thousand 735 additional capacities were created in private education institutions in this context, and 2 thousand 332 students have benefited so far.

Özer said: “As of now, 4 guidance teachers and psychological counselors are serving in the field. It makes every contribution to our citizens and children to strengthen their psychosocial resilience. As of today, we will increase this number to 5. We have created psychosocial support tents not only in Malatya but also in tent cities and container centers established in 10 provinces. Here, together with our guidance teachers, psychological counselors and all the teams of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, we provide all kinds of support to our children in these tents to strengthen their psychosocial resilience. All the artists of our Ministry of Culture and Tourism are doing activities and playing games for our children there. In this context, we have set up 355 psychosocial support tents so far. Hopefully, we will complete the installation of psychosocial support tents in all tent cities, container centers and meeting places in 10 provinces by Friday.”

Explaining that more than 212 thousand teachers working in the field are on administrative leave because the schools were not opened, but the full course fees will be paid, Minister Özer stated that as of today, the Presidential Decree on the subject was published in the Official Gazette. Özer said, “Paid teachers and master trainers who take classes for a fee will also receive their full wages on the days when education is interrupted due to the earthquake.” he said.

Özer continued his words as follows: We have 20 schools and buildings in the region. 868 of them were destroyed. Damage assessment of all other buildings will be completed by our Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change by Friday. As of next week, we will complete all the work on education planning in these 95 provinces, in which districts and in which regions we will open our schools, by the weekend. Hopefully, as of next week, we will share the results of these studies with all our citizens. Again, in this context, we continue to work on the requests of our earthquake survivor teachers and administrative staff to be assigned to other provinces, the appointment of apologies, and the teachers who will come here from other provinces. Hopefully, we will share their planning as of next week. As of February 10, we are starting education in 71 provinces. In order for us to normalize life, we need to normalize education first, because the Ministry of National Education is not Turkey's sample, but its universe. We will apply the same approach, the same experience, in this process, as we have contributed to the normalization of Turkey by ensuring rapid normalization with its 20 million students and 20 million teachers during the covid process. If we did not make a city-based or district-based decision and made school-based switch-offs, we will apply the same experience in 1,2 provinces that were affected by the earthquake during this earthquake. Our state is on the field with all its means. Hopefully, we will get through these processes quickly and together. We will look forward much stronger. There is a very successful coordination here. Our Honorable Minister, Governors, Deputies, Metropolitan Mayor, 10nd Army Commander, Gendarmerie Commander, Provincial Police Chief manage the processes very successfully with all other units. Hopefully, we will gradually normalize those tents on the field and transfer them to other regions and provinces in need. Thank you again.”
