MEB to Launch 'Earthquake Psychoeducation Programs' with the Opening of Schools

The Ministry of National Education (MEB) will start “earthquake psychoeducation programs” for students, teachers and parents with the opening of schools. The Ministry of National Education will provide psychological first aid to students, parents, teachers and other individuals transferred from this region, in addition to the psychosocial support provided in the provinces where earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş have been experienced. As of February 20, when schools will open, Earthquake Psychoeducation Programs will be conducted for all students in 71 cities that were not directly affected by the earthquake.

The MoNE Post-earthquake Psychosocial Support Action Plan was prepared by the MoNE Psychosocial Coordination Unit for the provinces that were and were not directly affected by the earthquake. In the regions affected by the earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş, the psychosocial support centers established by the Ministry of National Education will provide support to children by guidance teachers and psychological counselors, while new support practices will be initiated in this process.

Psychological first aid for those transferred from the earthquake area

According to the support programs, psychological first aid will be given to students, parents, teachers and other individuals who are transferred from the earthquake zone provinces and placed in dormitories, hostels, hotels by psychosocial support teams in provinces that are not directly affected by the earthquake. As of February 20, when schools will open, Earthquake Psychoeducation Programs prepared for pre-school, primary, secondary and high school students in all schools in 71 provinces that are not directly affected by the earthquake will also be put into practice.

Psychosocial support services will be carried out in six stages within the framework of the Psychosocial Support Action Plan Implementation Principles in provinces not directly affected by the earthquake. In the first stage, psychological first aid will be applied by psychosocial support teams to students, parents, teachers and other individuals who are transferred from the earthquake zone provinces and placed in dormitories, hostels, hotels.

In the second stage, the “Earthquake-Teacher Session” was given to the teachers on February 20; “Earthquake-Parent Session” will be applied to parents by counselors and psychological counselors on February 21-22. In the third stage, the Post-earthquake Psychoeducation Program will be applied to students at all levels. Student sessions will start on February 23.

In the fourth and fifth stages, information sessions for families and teachers about bereavement and loss will be held by school counselors and psychological counselors. In the sixth stage, after the family and teacher sessions, the “Mourning Psychoeducation Program” will be applied by the guidance teachers and psychological counselors to the students with a high level of being affected by the disaster.
