11 Symptoms of Insulin Resistance

Memorial Health Group Medstar Topcular Hospital Ex. Dr. İbrahim Aydın talked about what should be known about insulin resistance. Specialist Dr. İbrahim Aydın said, “Insulin is an important hormone that brings blood sugar to normal levels. After meals, it is secreted from the beta cells of the pancreas and given to the bloodstream. There is always a small amount of insulin in the blood. Insulin is secreted at high levels after meals; If muscles, adipose tissue and liver respond poorly to insulin, blood sugar is difficult to control. This is called insulin resistance. Insulin released from the pancreas rapidly and excessively after meals; It causes a sudden feeling of hunger by lowering blood sugar 2-3 hours after a meal. In the patient, this situation manifests itself with mild tremors and sweating in the hands together with the hunger.”

Stating that the incidence of type 2 diabetes is increasing day by day, Specialist Dr. İbrahim Aydın said, “Inadequate and malnutrition leads to the collapse of the immune system and infections. Insulin resistance is also called metabolic syndrome. Insulin resistance is a clinical picture that is the precursor of Diabetes Mellitus. The risk of diabetes is increasing every year. The incidence of Type 5 diabetes has increased in 10-2 years.” he said.

Insulin resistance can cause the following diseases apart from Type 2 diabetes;

  • Hypertension
  • High cholesterol
  • triglyceride elevation
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome
  • coronary artery disease
  • Colon tumors
  • Breast Cancer
  • Vascular occlusions due to increased tendency to thrombosis
  • Fatty liver and liver fibrosis,
  • cardiomyopathy
  • Muscle cramps
  • skin disorders
  • Growth in cartilage tissue (pseudoacromegaly)
  • amyloid disease
  • Alzheimer's
  • “Watch out for the signs of insulin resistance!”
  • Feeling of sleepiness and heaviness after a meal or after eating a sugary food
  • Hungry after eating, sweating, trembling in hands
  • Difficulty gaining and/or losing weight quickly
  • Frequent hunger and desire to eat sweets
  • Concentration and perception difficulties
  • Sleeping disorder
  • Thickening around the waist
  • Liver Fatty
  • menstrual irregularity in women
  • Hair growth
  • Color changes in the form of brown browning in the armpits and neck

Saying that waist circumference of 90 cm in women and more than 100 cm in men during the diagnosis of insulin resistance is one of the important indicators, Specialist Dr. İbrahim Aydın said, “Usually, high triglyceride levels in the blood are sufficient, but an increased body mass index makes the diagnosis. Calculating the homa index by measuring fasting blood glucose and fasting insulin confirms the diagnosis. In patients who have advanced to diabetes, diabetes occurs with the symptoms of drinking a lot of water, frequent urination and eating very often. On physical examination, signs of blackening of the skin, called acanthosis nigrigans, are typical physical examination findings for insulin resistance. he said.

Specialist Dr. İbrahim Aydın continued his speech by saying:

“Individual treatment is planned in metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. In order to prevent diseases that may occur as a result of insulin resistance, it is necessary to make permanent changes in exercise, lifestyle and eating habits, especially in weight control. Medication is adjunctive therapy. The main thing is to increase physical activity. In drug treatment, scientifically proven metformin and pioglitazone are used in low doses to overcome insulin resistance in some patients. If insulin resistance is accompanied by another disease, combined treatments with different drugs can be used.

Because people with insulin resistance get hungry very often; Diets with frequent meals and snacks are recommended. However, this is wrong. The excess of the number of meals causes more insulin secretion in the person and they experience more hunger attacks. Thus, weight gain continues. Instead, fewer meals should be recommended and meals should be planned with protein. Reducing carbohydrate and fatty foods together with regular daily walking or sports activities are the main treatment approaches.
