Pioneering Operation in Cancer from DEU Hospital

Continuing to put forward pioneering practices in health, DEU Research and Practice Hospital has made its mark on another principle in the Aegean Region. Thoracic Surgery Specialist Assoc. Dr. Karaçam and his team were able to remove the mass through sedation.

Dokuz Eylul University (DEU) Research and Application Hospital continues to put forward pioneering practices in health. DEU Research and Application Hospital has finally made another first in the Aegean Region. Eftal Özcanlar (67), living in İzmir, was diagnosed with lung cancer at the DEU Research and Practice Hospital, where she applied with the complaint of persistent diarrhea. After detailed examinations, a cancerous mass was detected in the lower lobe of the left lung of the patient, who was treated at the hospital. Thoracic Surgery Specialist Assoc. Dr. Volkan Karaçam and his team of 9 people intervened without giving general anesthesia to the patient who had respiratory problems. Under thoracic blockade and sedation, the mass in the patient's lung was removed through a single three-centimeter incision (uniportal) from the chest area, by lobectomy with the closed method (vats). The successful operation, which lasted about 2 hours, was a first in the Aegean Region; It has made its name among the successful operations in this field in our country.

Özcanlar, who underwent surgery in the presence of specialist doctors and healthcare team of DEU Research and Practice Hospital, was discharged from the hospital after being kept under observation for three days as a precaution. Emphasizing that successful surgical intervention will lead to similar operations in Turkey, Assoc. Dr. Volkan Karaçam said, “As DEU, we continue to break new ground in health. We performed a very successful and pioneering operation with our team. We've done a lot of surgery without general anesthesia before; however, cancer surgery was a very challenging field. In this sense, we paved the way for similar operations to be carried out in our country. Since our patient had some respiratory problems, we performed cancer surgery with sedation without putting him under general anesthesia. Our patient is doing well now. As Dokuz Eylul University Research and Application Hospital, a first in the Aegean Region; We are proud of this successful operation, which can be considered a pioneer for our country.”
