Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Continues Its Struggle Against Medical Waste

Ankara Metropolitan Municipality continues its nature-friendly practices that prioritize public health. In line with the demands from the hospitals, especially during the pandemic period, it is fighting for medical waste on a 25/7 basis in 24 districts. The Department of Urban Aesthetics, which collected medical waste by making 2021 thousand trips in 90, increased the number of medical waste vehicles to 15. Last year, a total of 460 tons of medical waste brought from the surrounding provinces, especially the Capital, was disposed of.

The Metropolitan Municipality, which has implemented environmentally friendly practices one by one, continues its struggle with medical wastes without slowing down.

460 TONS OF MEDICAL WASTE COLLECTED FROM THE CAPITAL AND OTHER PROVINCES DISPOSAL

The Department of Urban Aesthetics, which collected medical waste by making 2021 thousand 7 trips per month and 500 trips annually in 90, disposed of a total of 317 tons of medical waste, of which 143 tons were sent from Ankara and 460 tons were sent from the surrounding provinces.

While pathological wastes are also destroyed at the ITC Integrated Industrial and Medical Waste Disposal Center in Çadırtepe, Sincan, the Department of Urban Aesthetics is expanding its medical waste vehicle fleet day by day.

Stating that they have increased the number of medical waste vehicles to 9 by adding 15 new vehicles to the fleet this year, Salih Demir, Medical Waste Chief of the Waste Coordination Branch of the Department of Urban Aesthetics, shared the following information:

“As Ankara Metropolitan Municipality, we carry out medical waste disposal in 25 shifts every day in our 2 districts. Approximately 40 tons of medical waste is disposed of daily in Ankara. In line with the demands of health institutions, we receive medical wastes within 45 minutes. With the awareness of responsibility imposed on us by the medical waste disposal service, which directly concerns public health, we have strengthened our fleet with 2022 new vehicles in 9. Our facility is the first and only facility in Turkey where medical wastes are disposed of by incineration. Pathological wastes, which are a special group of medical wastes, are also incinerated and destroyed. For this purpose, we also carry out the disposal of waste from other provinces.”
