China's 3rd Generation Nuclear Reactor Receives UK Approval

Hualong One, the third generation nuclear reactor developed by China General Nuclear Power Corporation, has documented sufficient for use in the UK. The reactor met the General Design Assessment (GDA) standard, according to a joint statement released by the British Office of Nuclear Regulatory (ONR) and the Environment Agency (EA).

Before the new technology is made available, it must pass an assessment conducted by the ONR and EA to determine its safety and environmental impact. ONR has issued a Design Acceptance Confirmation (DAC) for the Hualong One, and the Environmental Agency has issued a Design Acceptability Statement (SoDA).

CGN and French state-owned electricity giant EDF signed agreements with the British government in September 2016 to build three projects in the UK. Based in Essex, Bradwell, the project is expected to use Hualong One technology.
