Alstom Launches Driverless Metropolis Trains in Chennai’s Second Phase

In a significant leap for urban mobility, Alstom has successfully introduced a fleet of driverless Metropolis trains on Chennai’s 4th Corridor, marking a new era in India’s rapid transit infrastructure. The event, graced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, underscores a strategic partnership between Alstom and Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). This collaboration has culminated in the delivery of 108 elegantly designed train cars, assembled at the Sri City manufacturing hub, exemplifying India’s growing capability in high-tech rail systems.

Enhanced Connectivity on a 26-Kilometer Corridor with 28 Stations

The newly inaugurated 4th Corridor extends from Poonamallee Bypass to Light House, sprawling across 26 kilometers. It integrates 28 stations, connecting residential, commercial, and cultural zones, thereby easing daily commutes for over 11 million residents of Chennai. The corridor ensures swift, reliable, and eco-friendly transportation, significantly reducing dependency on road traffic, congestion, and pollution.

State-of-the-Art Trains Offer Speed and Superior Passenger Comfort

Designed for efficiency and safety, the new trains operate at speeds up to 80 km/h, featuring three-car configurations capable of transporting up to 1,000 passengers each. Equipped with advanced amenities, including climate control, real-time passenger information screens, CCTV surveillance, and priority spaces for women and disabled travelers, these trains prioritize passenger experience and security.

Regenerative braking technology not only enhances energy efficiency but also aligns with sustainability goals by harnessing braking energy for reuse. These technological advancements position Chennai’s metro system among the most modern in India.

Cultural Elements Infuse Unique Design and Identity

The aesthetics of the trains celebrate Chennai’s rich heritage. Exterior designs draw inspiration from traditional Bharatanatyam dance gestures, while interior themes incorporate elements of Kolam art, reflecting regional artistic expressions. This fusion of culture and innovation fosters a unique identity, making each journey a celebration of Chennai’s vibrant history.
