Europe Accelerates Transition from Fossil Fuels to Renewable Heating Solutions
Recent data from the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) reveals a wildfire growth in the adoption of renewable heating technologies across the continent. Over 2022, heat pump sales in Europe surged by 13%, reaching nearly 3 million units, while the overall installed base surpassed 29 million units—highlighting a major paradigm shift in how Europeans heat their homes.
Transforming Europe’s Energy Landscape
This remarkable expansion isn’t just about consumer choice; it fundamentally reshapes the European energy landscape. With each new heat pump installed, Europe reduces its dependency on imported fossil fuels, particularly natural gas. The installed heat pump capacity now matches the energy content of over 200 tankers of LNG, significant cutting reliance on imported fossil fuels and saving around €9.7 billion annually in energy import costs.
More critically, the total heat generated through these devices now exceeds the LNG imported into the EU, especially by 2025 when the combined capacity will match twice the LNG volume coming through the Eastern Mediterranean route, indicating a robust local renewable energy shift.
Leading Countries Push Boundaries
France, Germany, and Italy stand out as Europe’s top markets. Germany, in particular, recorded a 50% growth rate in heat pump sales, pushing their market share above 50% for the first time. France remains the leader with 528,000 units sold within a year, holding its position amidst fierce competition from Italy which sold approximately 423,000 units.
From a stock standpoint, France boasts nearly 7 million units, while Italy follows closely with 5 million—evidence of deep market penetration. In terms of per capita sales, Lithuania and Norway emerge as leaders, with 46 and 43 units sold per thousand households, respectively. Norway maintains an extraordinary density of 650 units per 1,000 households, underlining the high adoption rate in colder, energy-conscious markets.
Expanding the Market: Nine Additional Countries Join
Beyond the main 18 markets, nine more nations—including Bulgaria, Greece, and Romania—are rapidly increasing their heat pump deployment. This expansion predicts that, by 2025, the total sales will reach approximately 3.1 million units, further amplifying Europe’s renewable heating future.

The EHPA Director, Paul Kenny, emphasizes that each new heat pump installed directly boosts Europe’s energy security.
