Poland has taken a giant leap forward in railway comfort and inclusivity with the successful modernization of 50 “Combo” type carriages, developed by the historic H. Cegielski Fabryka Pojazdów Szynowych (FPS). These cutting-edge train cars now serve as a testament to Poland’s commitment to elevating passenger journeys with innovative design, top-tier amenities, and enhanced accessibility features.
Modernization of Combo Carriages: A Strategic Transition
This ambitious project was spearheaded through a strategic collaboration between FPS and PKP Intercity, Poland’s primary national railway operator. Over the course of two years, the modernization process reinvigorated these classic carriages, transforming them into state-of-the-art vehicles equipped to serve popular tourist destinations such as Zakopane, Kołobrzeg, and Tri-City. The total investment amounted to nearly 351 million PLN, supported substantially by the European Union’s National Recovery and Resilience Facility (KPO), showing Poland’s dedication to sustainable and modern rail infrastructure.
Designed for All: Accessibility and Family-Friendly Features
The new Combo carriages prioritize inclusive design. They accommodate travelers with mobility challenges by installing two wheelchair areas, along with personnel-friendly features such as braille signage and emergency SOS buttons. The seamless, zero-threshold floors and adjustable entrances facilitate easy access for elderly passengers, families with strollers, and those with limited mobility.
Children and families benefit from specially decorated sections featuring engaging graphics, offering a welcoming and playful environment. The coaches include adjustable seats, family zones, and baby changing facilities, making each journey comfortable and enjoyable for travelers of all ages. Bicycle storage compartments also cater to eco-conscious consumers seeking a green travel alternative, allowing cyclists to bring their bikes safely on board.
Enhanced Passenger Experience and Comfort
Passenger comfort remains a top priority. The modernized carriages feature:
- Individual power outlets and USB charging ports
- Free Wi-Fi access for seamless internet connectivity
- Advanced digital information displays indicating journey progress, upcoming stops, and temperature
- Ergonomic seating arranged in flexible configurations to maximize space and comfort
Furthermore, the interior design emphasizes soundproofing and vibration reduction, significantly decreasing noise levels during travel, resulting in a calmer, more relaxing ride.
State-of-the-Art Technologies and Sustainable Features
The modernization involved complete overhaul of the carriage’s chassis and power systems. This upgrade reduces energy consumption and minimizes maintenance costs, aligning with Poland’s environmental objectives. The new systems also improve stability, allowing for smoother rides even on less maintained tracks.

Deployment and Future Expansion Plans
PKP Intercity has already put these modernized combi carriages into active service on prime routes to Poland’s most attractive tourist destinations, especially during the summer and holiday seasons. By the end of this project, the railway operator aims to expand its fleet to include 165 Combo cars, with plans to purchase an additional 56 new locomotives and modernize a total of 248 vehicles.
This expansion intends to further improve the quality of service, enhance intercity connectivity, and support Poland’s goal of becoming a more sustainable and passenger-centric transportation network. The integration of advanced train technology and improved accessibility signals a significant step towards future-proofing Polish railways, ensuring they remain competitive and inclusive for years to come.
