San Francisco Public Transportation System SFMTA Works with a 3.5 Inch Floppy Disk!

San FranciscoPublic transport users in 's tech hub may be happy to learn that their journeys will no longer depend on floppy disks. The city's automated light rail control system still relies on 3.5-inch floppy disks, but that's changing.

Statements by Jeffrey Tumlin

transportation manager for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency Jeffrey Tumlinstated that the use of floppy disks in the system poses a risk and emphasized the importance of update projects. Tumlin stated that floppy disks increase the risk of data corruption and can cause major malfunctions.

The system, which was established in 1998, started to work with the influence of the floppy disk technology that was widespread at that time. However, with the advancement of technology, the reliability and use of floppy disks decreased.

Update Process

While SFMTA acknowledges that updating the public transportation system is a challenging and costly process, it aims to achieve this change with the help of federal grants through a 10-year phased update plan.
