Üsküdar University Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Sociology Res. See. Dr. Berat Dağ evaluated the issue of hoarding at home.
Wars, civil conflicts, inflationary environments and epidemics trigger hoarding!
Sociologist Dr. noted that in an environment of fear and anxiety caused by wars, civil conflicts, inflationary environments and epidemics, individuals and communities focus on their own interests and turn to thoughts and actions such as hoarding. Berat Dağ also said the following about the inflation issue that triggers hoarding in society:
“One of the measures that must be taken to reach a sustainable level of development is related to solving the inflation problem. Because in a risky environment where prices fluctuate extremely rapidly, it becomes difficult for individuals to make rational decisions for social interests. In other words, individuals doubting their present and future and fixating on the goal of mere accumulation will prevent them from participating in the production, circulation and consumption process.”
It is a serious problem that hoarding deepens social inequality.
Dr. also stated that it is a serious problem that hoarding, which is directed by producers and consumers in the inflationary environment, deepens social inequality. Berat Dağ said, “In order to maintain social solidarity against this problem, it is extremely important to think about economic, health and justice policies that give confidence to individuals, communities and societies.” said.
Hoarding causes social destruction…
Dr. also noted that each individual and community that resorts to hoarding does not realize what kind of social destruction they cause while meeting their own interests. Berat Dağ said, “Producers' stockpiling to gain unfair profit will cause social poverty and conflict to become widespread. On the other hand, consumers resorting to short-term solutions such as stockpiling to ensure their own livelihood means that the production and distribution elements, which are a part of economic efficiency, become stagnant. For this reason, it is extremely important for individuals to build a social interaction focused on the value of labor and trust, rather than turning to economic action in a cunning or panicky way, thinking only of their own interests.” he said.
Goods turned into garbage…
Dr. noted that it is known that suppliers stockpile their commodities and even turn them into garbage in their greed for profit. Berat Dağ said, “It is clear that in this environment, consumers tend to panic and accumulate more than they need. Therefore, today economic interactions are shaped by an extremism based on individual interests. “It is quite appropriate to summarize this process with the analogy of social mental eclipse.” he said.
Consumers' tendency to stockpile...
Stating that consumers' hoarding tendency cannot be understood without considering the social interactions that occur, Dr. Berat Dağ said, “In this context, it is easy to predict that unless an egalitarian, libertarian and solidaristic social structure is built within the framework of labor-based trust, we will constantly encounter such individual problems. From this point of view, it is necessary to remind that a world where individuals do not feel at risk is possible. "If individuals begin to think that they will starve at any moment, become poor, cannot shelter, get sick or even die, no more time should be wasted to analyze the structural crises that cause this thought." said.
