Students' Water Awareness Project in Diyarbakır Was Successful!

The "Water Volunteer Youth in the Field Project", prepared by the students of Kayapınar Girls Anatolian Imam Hatip High School in Diyarbakır, regarding water efficiency, has spread to 12 cities and 3 countries.

55 volunteer students taking part in the project at Diyarbakır Kayapınar Girls Anatolian Imam Hatip High School visit schools and carry out awareness raising activities for their peers on the efficient use of water, the effects of drought and climate change. Students who have visited 12 schools in the city so far have reached 1200 of their peers. Then, these schools also started to work on the project.

Project coordinator and history teacher Ferda Salık said that Turkey is among the regions under water stress, that the era of global warming is over and that we are facing the era of "global burning".

Explaining that they first started the project in their own schools, Salık stated that they later implemented the project in other schools with the support of Kayapınar District National Education Directorate.

12 volunteer students from 3 provinces and 495 countries are also taking part in the project.

Some schools in Denizli, Afyonkarahisar, Konya, Kayseri, Zonguldak, Samsun, Izmir, Bitlis, Van, Ankara, Şanlıurfa and Manisa were also included in the study. On the other hand, with the support of the Almaty Education Attaché, teacher students in Kazakhstan also started to take part in the project.

Schools in Greece and Lithuania were contacted via e-twinning and included in the project. 12 volunteer students from 3 provinces and 495 countries take part in the study.

At Kayapınar Girls Anatolian Imam Hatip High School, which carried out the study, aerators were installed on the tap heads and the valves were turned down for water efficiency. Teachers and students aim to increase water efficiency by visiting schools and organizing information seminars.

“Now it's up to young people who want to protect their future.”

Water volunteer Nurşin Duman, a 9th grade student, stated that they explain how and why water should be used efficiently in the schools they attend and provide information on issues such as zero waste, and said, "I think the floor is now with us, the young people who want to protect their future. “I invite everyone to support this mobilization.” he said.

9th grade student Ecrin Irmak Koca said, “The climate crisis worries us very much. We learned that we are on the edge of drought. "We are currently visiting schools and trying to raise awareness." said.
