Precautions to Take Against Thirst While Fasting

Expert Dietitian Şükrü Can Gülşen gave important information about the precautions to be taken against thirst while fasting during Ramadan.

Avoid Overeating

Eating multiple and large meals at iftar or sahur increases the need for water during the digestive process. This both tires your metabolism and increases your need for water.

Do Not Consume Tea and Coffee Immediately After Iftar

Since tea and coffee are diuretics, they cause excessive urination. This increases the need for water in the kidneys and internal organs. In addition, caffeine and theine contained in coffee are micro-essential substances that require water. This increases the need for water.

Be Careful When Consuming Sugary and Acidic Soft Drinks!

Cola and sugary soft drinks can never replace water. But since the person drinks liquid, he thinks that his water needs are met and reduces his water consumption. In this case, it is a big mistake. Therefore, these soft drinks should be limited and water consumption should be increased.

Consume Adequate Water

Since meal times change during Ramadan, people try to meet their food needs rather than consuming too much water. But water is an important substance used in the digestion of food. For this reason, a minimum of 2 liters of water should be consumed between iftar and sahur.

Do Not Eat Fatty and Sauced Foods

Vegetable and animal oils and sauces and creams containing salt and oil are very difficult to digest. Since most of the water we consume is involved in their digestion, it increases the need for water. It should be consumed limitedly at iftar and not at all at sahur.

Stay Away from Salty Foods

Since the sodium contained in salt works in osmotic pressure, it retains a lot of water. For this reason, it increases the need for water but does not allow the use of much water. For this reason, salty foods should be avoided.
