Do not underestimate these complaints in children

Specialist from Nev Esentepe Department of Child Health and Diseases stated that the symptoms of vomiting and abdominal pain, which have been increasing recently, are due to viral infections that have become widespread in nurseries and schools. Dr. Gökçe Nur Öztürk said, "Children with vomiting and abdominal pain should be examined and the underlying causes should be investigated."

VOMITING AND ABDOMINAL PAIN ARE COMMON COMPLAINTS

Specialist Dr. Öztürk said, “Vomiting and abdominal pain are common complaints in children. It is most commonly seen due to infections. It may be due to infections such as upper respiratory tract infection, intestinal infection, urinary tract infection, or due to many reasons such as food poisoning, reflux, gastritis, physiological reflux of the newborn, food allergy, intestinal obstruction, appendicitis, and head trauma. "The most common cause of vomiting and abdominal pain in patients applying to the outpatient clinic recently is viral infections, which are especially common in nurseries and schools," he said.

CARE SHOULD BE CAREFUL ABOUT LIQUID INTAKE.

Stating that loss of appetite and consequent malnutrition are common in sick children, Specialist said that special attention should be paid to fluid intake during this period. Dr. Gökçe Nur Öztürk: “Fatchy, spicy, acidic and sugary foods that will strain the stomach should be avoided. During infancy, emphasis should be placed on both nutrition and immunity, as well as breastfeeding. In viral infections, plenty of fluid intake and rest are more effective than many drug treatments. Parents should pay attention to temperature monitoring during this period. "In cases where the child's general condition deteriorates and there is a high fever, a specialist physician examination is absolutely necessary," he said.

NOSE CLEANING IS IMPORTANT

Specialist Dr. Öztürk said, “Nasal cleaning is necessary to prevent nasal congestion. Keeping the room humidity level between 40-50 percent, making sure to rest, and avoiding factors such as dust, pollen and odor that increase respiratory sensitivity. In the room where children sleep, the bed should not be near the heater. The room should be ventilated frequently, there should be no perfume, detergent softener odor or plants in the room, and most importantly, plush toys, furry and thick blankets and carpets that cause dust should not be kept in the room. "Especially in children whose cough complaints increase at certain hours or in a certain environment, this may be due to the lack of environmental precautions," he said.

CHILDREN SHOULD BE TAUGHT THE IMPORTANCE OF HAND WASHING

Expert stated that one of the ways to be affected by the epidemic is to pay attention to hand hygiene. Dr. Gökçe Nur Öztürk said, “The importance of hand washing should be taught to children by families. Resting sick children at home both accelerates recovery and prevents possible contamination and epidemics. The most important thing for immunity is a balanced and adequate diet and sleep patterns. He concluded his speech by saying, "The best way to protect against the influenza epidemic, which we see frequently every year, is the flu vaccine, which we also recommend and is suitable for children over 6 months of age."
