Don't Exaggerate Your Daily Water Consumption!

Internal Medicine and Nephrology Specialist Prof. Dr. Tekin Akpolat said that on the occasion of March 22, World Water Day, it may be a problem for patients with kidney and heart problems to drink 2 liters of fluid a day, so if they cannot excrete the water they drink through urine, there may be fluid accumulation in their bodies and they should talk to their doctors about the amount of fluid they should take.

Stating that the amount of water most adults should consume is approximately 2 liters per day, Prof. Dr. Tekin Akpolat said, “It is not necessary to meet the daily water need of 2 liters from water. Liquid taken with coffee, tea, yoghurt is also suitable. The important thing here is that the liquid taken does not contain harmful substances such as salt and sugar. "For patients with kidney and heart problems, drinking 2 liters of fluid a day may cause problems. If they cannot excrete the water they drink through urine, fluid accumulation may occur in their bodies. They should discuss the amount of fluid they need to consume with their doctors," he said.

Prof. stated that one should be careful not to become dehydrated during Ramadan. Dr. Akpolat said, “Being dehydrated reduces our energy towards iftar, so it is necessary to be careful to drink fluids at sahur. Drinking water during iftar can also curb overeating. Drinking less water or holding back urine to avoid going to the toilet outside the home may cause problems with urination in later ages. It is sufficient for the water to be clean, being alkaline has no additional benefit. "There is usually no harm in drinking more than 2 liters of fluid a day, but we should not exaggerate by taking 6-7 liters a day," he said.

Stating that it is not right to drink water before going to bed at night or after waking up at night unless there is a special situation, Akpolat said, “Let's not forget that healthy sleep is as important as drinking water. We should not forget those with severe kidney disease. Perhaps the biggest dream of most people is to drink water desperately. "For this reason, let's appreciate our health and never forget that water is the healthiest drink," he said.
