Transformation That Will Shed Light on Konya's History

A work start program was held in the Büyük Larende Transformation Project carried out by Konya Metropolitan Municipality and Meram Municipality within the scope of the Darü'l-Mülk Project, one of the largest revival projects carried out in Turkey.

Speaking in the program, Meram Mayor Mustafa Kavuş mentioned that the historical project carried out in the Larende region is a big job for Konya. Stating that they have a team of competent people in this field in Turkey, Mayor Kavuş said, “Hopefully, with the restoration of the city walls and the restoration of the Larende Gate, the region will be completely revitalized with cultural, historical and social life; and where trade is the very heart of what it used to be; With the Bedesten, it will be revived in the place where the heart of all history, Byzantium, Rome, Seljuk and Ottoman beats. "I would like to thank the Metropolitan Municipality, our Metropolitan Municipality Mayor and our teammates," he said.

THE VIEW THAT DOES NOT SUIT THE CITY IS BEING ELIMINATED

Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay stated that they carried out a major urban transformation in Larende Street, an area where everyone passes and shops at some point in their lives.

Mayor Altay pointed out that especially the construction material dealers are concentrated and that the physical space is far from serving the city residents and does not suit the city, and said, “In addition, there is a serious traffic congestion here. Again, it was creating an inconvenience here, like a tumor, in front of the urban transformation we carried out in Şükran District. As a result of the work we have done with Meram Municipality, we have reached a good point. There is something we say in the squares. 'Let's be a trio, let's be strong'. One of the best examples of this is the Büyük Larende Transformation. "It was carried out very quickly together with our district municipality, our Metropolitan Municipality, and the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, and we are now about to complete the second stage of this historical transformation," he said.

GREAT LARENDE TRANSFORMATION CONSISTS OF THREE STAGES

Sharing that a three-stage work is being carried out in the Büyük Larende Transformation, Mayor Altay continued as follows.

“The first is the process of moving existing shops. We moved our tradesmen to the shops we built where the Old Animal Market is located. Our tradesmen have now moved to their new location and continue their trade there. Our tradesmen became property owners here with long-term opportunities, regardless of whether they were property owners or tenants. In the second stage, expropriation works have been completed and today we are carrying out the demolition process. We hope to complete the demolition process as soon as possible and open the street to traffic. Now, we have started the third stage as of today. Here, our main goal, the process of revealing the outer walls of Konya, was started. Now, after the surface cleaning works, archaeological excavations will continue. Then we will see once again what we can do with construction and reconstruction projects.”

THE PROJECT WILL SHED LIGHT ON THE HISTORY OF KONYA

Expressing his expectation that the project will yield data that will shed light on the history of Konya, Mayor Altay said, “Konya is an ancient city. It is a city that served as the capital for 200 years and we see the ruins of the outer walls of this city in many places. Hopefully, with the restoration of the city walls, we think that a period in which we will talk about the inside of the city walls again will begin in Konya. In addition, as a result of the expropriations we made between the two important works of art in Konya, namely, sahibi Ata and Sırçalı Madrasahs, two rare works were brought to light. "Hopefully, with the completion of Şükran Urban transformation and this work within the scope of Darü'l-Mülk, we continue to put the pieces of that big puzzle in place one by one," he said.
