Close Defense Training for Women at the Historical Walls of Diyarbakır

Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality provides close defense training to women in bastion number 82, which it converted into "Dağkapı Sur Women's Cultural Center".

The Metropolitan Municipality continues its efforts to ensure that women take a more active role in social life and feel safe.

The Department of Women and Family Services transformed bastion number 82 into a center for the mental and physical empowerment of women by restoring its historical walls.

After the restoration completed in 2022, women have the opportunity to improve themselves by attending various courses in the historical place, which serves as the "Dağkapı Sur Women's Cultural Center".

In addition to traditional skills such as reading and writing, Quran interpretation, handicrafts and cooking, the center also provides close defense training to help women increase their self-confidence and protect themselves.

Ayşe Acay, responsible for the Women's Life Center, stated that they served more than a thousand women at the cultural center.

Stating that bastion number 82 was previously unusable, Acay stated that they started to provide various services here after the restoration.

Explaining that they provide psychological counseling services as well as courses at the center, Acay stated that they can touch women's lives.

Support for efforts to combat violence against women

Close defense instructor Evin Turan said that one of the aims of the training is to support efforts to combat violence against women.

Turan said:

“All kinds of things happen to our women outside. We see these a lot on television. They are harassed and subjected to theft. Therefore, it is very important for our women to receive this education. Many women regained their lost self-confidence after receiving this training. Our women can defend themselves outside. “They can go out easily.”
