China to Peak Carbon Emissions Ahead of Plans

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, China is poised to move ahead with new energy projects created in the context of climate change, helping the country reach and exceed peak carbon emissions ahead of schedule. Indeed, international climate watchers have noted that China is moving faster toward replacing carbon-based energy with clean energy than many experts expected.

The International Energy Agency (IEA), an international organization that monitors developments in the global energy sector, revealed that China's 2023 electricity demand increase was met entirely through newly established clean energy capacity, and this was the first time in the country's history. This means that carbon emissions from China's coal-fired power plants will fall from coming years, according to the IEA.

China's renewable energy installed capacity exceeded 2023 billion kilowatts in 1,45. This amount is approximately 50 percent above the country's total installed energy production capacity. This data also overlaps with data from third-party organisations, such as UK non-governmental organization Transit Zero, which has been monitoring emissions in China by satellite.
