Birlik Sağlık Sen Muğla Provincial Chairman Abdullah Gül: 'Taking Precautions is in Our Hands'

Abdullah GÜL, Birlik Sağlık Sen Muğla Provincial Chairman of the Confederation of Independent Public Servants' Unions, whose short name is BASK, said: "Negligence kills, not earthquakes." "Our people should not die in rubble in our hospitals where they come to find healing," he said.

In his statement, Gül said, “As it is known, in the earthquake that took place in 6 provinces centered in Kahramanmaraş on February 11, we lost tens of thousands of people and hundreds of thousands of our citizens were injured. Most of the injured either continue their lives with a prosthesis or are in trouble with a prosthesis. This painful situation has left our entire country in mourning, especially in the future. "It has caused psychological trauma along with irrepressible deep pain." said.

Mayor Gül said, “Although the reason for these painful losses is the size of the earthquake, most of them are negligence, precautions not taken and illegalities turned a blind eye for the sake of profit. The fact that the losses in the Kyrgyzstan earthquake that took place yesterday, following the Japan earthquake of the same magnitude, was low, once again revealed that the reasons for our losses were not the size of the earthquake but the measures not taken.

The main reasons for these losses were hospitals that were destroyed or were unable to provide service due to severe damage. "While hundreds of our citizens breathed their last in the rubble of collapsed or severely damaged hospitals, thousands of our people lost their lives or had to lose a limb because they could not get out of the rubble at their doors and receive first aid," he said.

Mayor Gül continued his statement as follows: During the field studies we carried out today, we have learned that some parts of the Muğla Menteşe State Hospital's demolition decision are not earthquake resistant. The worse part is that these reports have been around since 2018 and our hospital is still operating. Prof. Dr. In Naci Görür's statements based on science, he states that an earthquake with a magnitude above 15 is expected in the 7 provinces of Muğla. This being the case, we cannot understand why we still turn a deaf ear to science. Especially when there is a lived example like Hatay.

As BASK, we have always fought for the rights of labor in the light of science. From the moment we first learned about these reports, we had official correspondence with all authorized institutions. We have absolute faith that our Muğla Governor, Mr. İdris Akbıyık, will show great sensitivity to this situation.”
