Healthy Living is Important in the Treatment of Reflux

According to the results of various scientific studies, approximately 7 percent of people complain of a burning sensation in the esophagus every day.

Gastroenterology Specialist Prof. shared that the rate of those who experience the burning sensation at night is 36 percent. Dr. Melih Özel explained, "Neglects such as using tobacco products, eating excessively high in fat, and not taking precautions to control weight increase the risk of people suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease."

EXCESSIVE MEDICATION USE, UNHEALTHY NUTRITION AND INACTIVITY CAUSE REFLUX

Underlining that there is no single factor in the formation of gastroesophageal reflux disease, Gastroenterology Specialist Prof. Dr. Melih Özel said, “The causes affecting reflux may vary from person to person, but functional disruption of the complex anatomical structure in the lower part of the esophagus, between the esophagus and the stomach, is one of the most important causes of the disease. "Advanced age and risk factors such as increased drug use due to advanced age, obesity, hiatal hernias, smoking, bad eating habits and sedentary lifestyle, some problems related to the digestive system or rheumatological and endocrinological origins are among the main causes of reflux," he said.

Explaining what patients who have not yet consulted a doctor or who have been diagnosed should and should not do, Prof. Dr. Melih Özel gave 13 recommendations that will give patients a sigh of relief.

  1. Reduce the amount of fat in your diet.
  2. There is no such thing as "this food or this drink is good for reflux". Keep in mind that there is no food and beverage option that will cause you to change or interrupt your treatment.
  3. Instead of corsets, tight belts and tight clothes, choose clothes that do not tighten or hug the body.
  4. Remember, the effects of foods on reflux symptoms are completely personal, so it's best not to generalize. Take note of which foods you have problems with and keep these foods out of your diet. On the other hand, decide by trying small amounts of foods whose effects you do not know, instead of removing them from the list from the beginning.
  5. Do not stop eating or drinking just because you have reflux.
  6. Whether you're dining out, on vacation, traveling, or wherever you are, stay in control of your diet.
  7. Observe the effects of food and drinks on you. If you know that they touch you, be careful to consume them carefully.
  8. Spices play an important role in reflux disease. Bitter food is nice, but it may give you nightmares.
  9. Control your weight well and stay away from very harsh diets.
  10. Do not lie down immediately after eating, relax your digestive system with light movements until bedtime.
  11. Take care to eat healthy. Eat less, do not skip meals, do not neglect snacks. Remember, vegetables may cause gas, but they generally won't increase your reflux.
  12. Observe and note the effects of adding or subtracting the food ingredients you use in the meals you prepare, one by one. In this way, after a certain period of time, you will have a database with which you will be able to understand which ingredient in which dish you would be more comfortable not using.
  13. Sugar and sweets can make you sad. Watch out for chocolate, mint, and cinnamon.
  14. Avoid tomato juice, grapefruit juice, sodas and drinks containing caffeine.
