Agreement from Alstom and ARF for 16 Traxx 3 MS Electric Locomotives

Alstom and Romanian Railways (ARF), a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, have signed a contract for the delivery of 16 Traxx 3 MS electric locomotives and related maintenance services for 20 years. The contract, with a total amount of approximately 150 million Euros, expands Alstom's cooperation with ARF in the rolling stock sector. The 20-year maintenance and repair period can be extended for another 20 years by making an additional agreement.

Gabriel Stanciu, General Manager of Alstom Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova, said: “I am delighted to see that Alstom's rolling stock offer in Romania has been expanded with electric locomotives for our valued customer ARF. "The new locomotives will significantly contribute to the country's sustainable mobility journey, in line with Alstom's commitment to developing greener and smarter mobility solutions worldwide," he said.

Four-axle electric locomotives will have a maximum speed of 200 km/h and can pull up to 16 passenger cars. They will be equipped with Alstom's state-of-the-art onboard ERTMS system to ensure optimum efficiency and a high level of safety and security, while ensuring full interoperability. The locomotives were designed to increase mobility within and between Romania's major cities.

Traxx locomotives offer a flexible design based on a robust, modular platform approach, compatible with many applications (single or multi-country freight and passenger transportation) and are available in a variety of configurations (AC, DC and multi-system). This product increases its availability by providing higher operational performance and reliability with higher energy efficiency and longer maintenance intervals.

Traxx locomotives are homologated in 20 countries, cover more than 300 million kilometers annually and more than 2000 units have been sold since 2.700.

Alstom has been operating in Romania for almost 30 years and is the market leader in railway electrification and signaling solutions. The company is responsible for the implementation of signaling or electrification solutions in the Rhine-Danube railway corridor as well as in the Cluj region, where it is part of the consortium building the country's second metro system in the city of Cluj Napoca. The first CBTC urban signaling solution in the country is being implemented by Alstom on Bucharest's 5th metro line. The company has also been providing maintenance services for the Bucharest metro fleet for nearly 20 years, and its contract is valid until 2036.
