Neurosurgery Specialist Op.Dr. Kerem Bıkmaz gave information on the subject. If you have pain in the neck and arm, if these pains increase especially in situations such as coughing, sneezing, straining, if there is limited movement in your arm, if there is numbness in the arms, be careful!

There is a high probability of having cervical disc herniation and lumbar disc herniation, which are very common in our society...

Cervical disc herniation is a disease that occurs with pain and stiffness caused by the sliding of the fluid between the seven discs that make up the skeletal structure in our neck and the deterioration of the muscle and nervous system functions in the sliding area.

A herniated disc occurs as follows: The spine is made of a series of interconnected bones called "vertebrae". A disc is a combination of strong connective tissues that connect one vertebra to another and acts as a cushion between the vertebrae. The disc consists of a hard outer layer called "annulus fibrosus" and a gel-like core called "nucleus pulposus". As we age, the center of the disc may begin to lose water content and the disc becomes less effective as a cushion. This can cause the central part of the disc to become displaced, bulging out through a crack in the outer layer (called a herniated or ruptured disc). Most disc herniations occur in the lower two discs of the lumbar spine, which fall at or just below the waist level.

A herniated disc can put pressure on nerves in the spine and cause pain, numbness, tingling, or leg weakness, called “sciatica.”

The possibility of a cervical disc herniation is especially high during sudden braking, traffic accidents, and situations where the neck moves back and forth.

Lifting heavy loads from high places above the neck is also a behavior that causes cervical disc herniation.

Another mistake made is falling asleep in front of the television and keeping the neck stuck to the right or left side.

Other movements that should be taken into consideration: talking for a long time by holding the mobile phone to the neck, looking at the screen by lifting or lowering the neck for a long time.

People should be careful not to lift heavy loads or make any adverse movements to avoid developing a cervical disc or herniated disc.
