The Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) visited his wife, Dr. Dilek Kaya came to Elazig with Imamoglu. Accompanied by CHP Elazığ deputy Gürsel Erol, İmamoğlu was informed by İBB Deputy Secretary General Gürkan Alpay, Murat Yazıcı and İBB Science Affairs Department Head Recep Korkut. İmamoğlu made statements to the journalists after the investigation. Emphasizing the importance of the Gazi Vocational Technical Anatolian High School, which they undertook to build, for Elazig, İmamoğlu said, “If you remember, we had a visit here again during the Elazig earthquake. Thanks to our deputy, he was making an effort on how to raise Elazig with a great effort and how every institution of the country could cooperate. He brought the school's offer to us. We accepted. Then we started a project process about this school.”
“IT IS NOT JUST A SCHOOL, IT IS AN EDUCATION CAMPUS”
Expressing that they received approval after the process they carried out with the Ministry of National Education, İmamoğlu said, “There is no other example of this school you see now. This is not some type of project. In general, type projects are implemented in schools, but this school is the work of a very valuable architect, who has been carefully studied here.” Stating that they started construction as of September 2022, following the unanimous decision of the IMM Assembly, İmamoğlu said:
“Of course, as you know, since 2022, especially during the earthquake period, the constructions in these regions were completely stopped, which took 3-3,5 months. Let's also underline a fact that one of the areas where Turkey has the biggest trouble today is the contracting sector, which is affected by the economic hardship. Because both the intense construction in the earthquake region, which is very difficult to supply personnel, and the fact that the commodity prices are very volatile, it really forces the sector. But despite that, my friends did a great job. I can say that they have brought the construction to the level of 50 percent now. During an interim period, there is an effort to 'can we put a certain part of it into service' during the education period of my friends this year. But if not, next summer, it will be prepared together with its interior furnishings, and hopefully it will be put into service in our Elazig with the preparation of a brilliant Gazi Industrial Vocational High School. Istanbul will be a very nice gift from the people of Istanbul to our Elazig after the earthquake that Elazig experienced. We are proud. In your presence, we would like to thank our deputy Gürsel Erol for creating such a valuable and auspicious occasion for us. This high school that we see now will add value to Elazig with its very special architecture, even with the concept of a campus spoken in Turkey… In fact, there are nearly 40 classrooms, more than 30 workshops, an indoor gymnasium and a conference hall, in fact, for Elazig, only It also has a strategy to provide valuable services such as an education campus, not just a school. THE STORY OF THE SCHOOL
After the earthquake that occurred in Elazig on January 24, 2020, IMM applied to the provincial governor and conveyed a request to build a school in the region. The Elazig Governorship, which welcomed the request, replied to the IMM that the Gazi Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School, gym and workshop buildings, which were damaged in the earthquake, could be redesigned and built. The IMM Assembly, at its session on September 16, 2021, approved the institution to build a school in Elazig. IMM President Ekrem İmamoğluwent to Elazig on October 15, 2021 to attend the “Construction protocol signing ceremony of the Gazi Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School building with 24 classrooms, workshop buildings, gymnasium and outbuildings”. The protocol was signed between Elazığ Provincial Director of National Education Feyzi Gürtürk and İBB Deputy Secretary General Gürkan Alpay, under the witness of İmamoğlu. In the school campus, which will have a total indoor area of 17 thousand 71 square meters; administrative offices, 24 classrooms, a total of 6 workshops and laboratories under 30 different disciplines, a conference hall for 330 people, a dining hall and a canteen, and an indoor sports hall of 1250 square meters. As the building façade material of the school under construction, “colored pressed brick cladding” was used to ensure integrity with the general color feeling of Elazig. Local materials were mainly used throughout the building.
