Goodyear has developed a new tire for the Italian sports car manufacturer Maserati's GranTurismo model. The tire developed for two different versions of the model, named Modena and Trofeo, with V6 twin-turbo engines, is the Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport, a member of Goodyear's UUHP (ultra-ultra-high performance) series. The acclaimed performance of the SuperSport has been enhanced by tuning into the specifications of the new Maserati models and will be offered as standard on the new GranTurismo. The tires will have the MGT mark to indicate that they are exclusive to the Italian brand.

Based on motorsport

The Goodyear Eagle F24 SuperSport series, produced using the same development technologies as the racing tires that lead teams to victory in the world's prestigious races, including the 1 Hours of Le Mans, provides superior performance for extreme road and track cars. The knowledge gained from Goodyear's participation in a number of high-level racing events was transferred to the Eagle F1 SuperSport road tire, which provides superior grip, handling and stability in dry and wet road conditions.

A tire developed with virtual simulation

Goodyear and Maserati collaborated on virtual simulation to develop tires for GranTurismo. Simulation makes the process of designing and developing high-performance tires more sustainable by reducing the number of prototype tires required. At the same time, cost and efficiency are increased by moving away from multiple iterations of physical prototype tires and collecting data with virtual R&D methods.

As one of the first manufacturers to apply simulation technology, which is an integral part of tire development for the road and track, Goodyear is leading innovation in the fast-growing tire industry.

Instead of using raw materials to produce prototype tires in small batches, advanced tire models are created in the virtual world. This way, thousands of different equations are calculated and tested in the simulator, saving the logistical costs associated with traditional testing.

Stating that they are pleased with the cooperation with Goodyear for the tire of the new GranTurismo, Maserati Model Chief Engineer Stefano Sangermano said, “The customized Eagle F1 SuperSport fits perfectly with the approach of our new model. The development using virtual simulation facilitated the work between the R&D teams of both parties and was very helpful.” said.

Goodyear OE General Manager Hans Vrijsen also stated that Maserati's selection of Goodyear as the UUHP tire supplier for the new GranTurismo is a multiple of the development of this tire. It means it's an integral part. This activity played a key role in setting tire and vehicle targets, narrowing the scope of tire design and reducing the number of physical development cycles. At Goodyear, we are committed to adopting new technologies and methods. This project with Maserati sets an example for our future work.” he said.
