In Izmir, Ophthalmologists from Various Countries of the World Shared Their Experiences

In Izmir, ophthalmologists from various countries of the world held a training on 'The Use of New Generation Intraocular Lenses and their Changing Technologies'. In the training held in a hotel, eye surgeons shared the results of the surgical operations they have performed so far with their colleagues while making presentations.

In the district of Çeşme, ophthalmologists from various countries of the world and from Turkey shared their experiences with the training on 'The Use of New Generation Intraocular Lenses and their Changing Technologies'. During the training held in a hotel, the surgeons shared the results of their surgical operations with other colleagues while making presentations. Providing information about the training, Dünyagöz Hospital Ophthalmology Specialist Assoc. Dr. Levent Akçay said that information was shared with surgeons from different parts of the world such as Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, Germany and Hungary.

In Turkey, the most common question on this subject is 'Is there a way to get rid of my near or far glasses?' Stating that the question was asked, Assoc. Dr. Akçay said, “There is this problem, especially in patients over the age of 40. We call these treatments with multifocal lenses. Our people call it the 'smart lens'. We share our experiences with surgeons from different parts of the world. How can we do better surgeries for our people by discussing the results we have obtained from the surgeries we have performed with our other colleagues? How can we offer quality? Topics such as these constitute the subject of our panel. Professional surgeons transfer their own experience to other surgeons," he said.

'It is necessary to apply lenses according to the patient'

Pointing out that a patient must have distance or near vision impairment before a smart lens can be inserted, Assoc. Dr. Akçay gave information about lens types and said:

“The patient may or may not have cataracts. If the age is around 40-50, if he/she uses close glasses or if he/she is a patient with cataracts, special examinations should be performed on these people to see if they are suitable. Not everyone can have this surgery. It is necessary to choose the appropriate lens for the person. Multifocal lenses are separated among themselves. Halkalı There are lenses and lenses we call 'Edof'. Halkalı lenses are called smart lenses, but 'Edof's are also partially smart lenses. It needs to be applied according to the patient.”

'Near-far corrected intraocular lenses are used too much'

Dünyagöz Hospital Ophthalmology Specialist Op. Dr. Baha Toygar stated that nowadays, near-far corrected intraocular lenses are used a lot.

Toygar said, “There is a great demand for this subject by patients. Patients want to have surgery if they wear far-near glasses, whether they are in cataract surgery or without cataracts. An important group among these patient groups is people who had laser treatment years ago. People who had laser treatment 20-30 years ago had surgery to get rid of glasses. But this time, they wear close glasses and they want to get rid of close glasses. We are examining these. There has been a great improvement in laser therapy over the years. Technology today is not the same as technology 20 years ago. That's why we examine patients very well. We are looking at whether the previous treatments have caused a problem or if there is an obstacle to the new lens we will wear. We examine the front layer, cornea, inner and back layer of the eye with new advanced devices. If we insert a lens into the eye, we can determine in advance whether the patient will be happy or how they will see. After performing these examinations, the eyes of some patients are suitable for the new generation lenses that see far and near together. We use different lenses for those who don't fit," he said.

'Measuring with artificial intelligence'

Op. Dr. Toygar said, “It is easier to operate on an eye that has never been touched, but problems may arise in people who have had laser surgery before. One of the most important problems is how many lenses will be placed in the eye. The perception that 'you cannot have cataract surgery or a different surgery in the future if you have laser treatment' is not correct. Calculating the power of the lens for the eye was problematic. Today there are very special devices. Now artificial intelligence has entered the business. Artificial intelligence is being loaded into measurement tools. Measurements are made, artificial intelligence can advise on which type of lens is suitable for the patient's eyes. It has become more possible to fix the number of the lens to be inserted into the eyes of the patients. The measurement is better in people whose eyes have never been touched. Our probability of hitting the number is 95 percent. This can decrease to 80 percent in people who have undergone laser surgery.

'Permanent salvation from far glasses'

Expressing that 'ICL' is a treatment that is getting more and more important in modern medicine, Dünyagöz Hospital Ophthalmology Specialist Op. Dr. Umut Güner said, “ICL treatment is the only option we encounter, especially in our patients who are not suitable for 'Excimer laser' treatment. The only difference between excimer laser treatment and laser treatment to get rid of glasses is that both eyes are made one or two days apart. The surgical success result is the same as with the 'Excimer laser', and our patient's eye is permanently relieved of his glasses for the rest of his life, if it is suitable in the pre-operative tests. The biggest advantage of ICL treatment is that the number limit is not nearly complete. At high numbers, we can safely apply ICL treatment to heal within 24 hours. It was both a meeting and a small surgical training for our young colleagues who have just started surgical treatment, on how and which patients ICL treatment should be applied, what should be considered, positive results, and how to deal with negative results.”
