The concert, which will be performed by Fasıl Ensemble within the scope of Istanbul Research Institute, “Istanbul and Music” Research Program (IMAP), can be watched at Pera Museum Auditorium on 20 May.

The “Istanbul and Music” Research Program (IMAP), operating under the umbrella of the Suna and Inan Kıraç Foundation Istanbul Research Institute, continues to host events that focus on the city's multi-faceted music culture with archival studies, concerts, publications, educational studies and speeches.

The fasil order, which was adopted in classical music circles in Istanbul in the late 17th century and the first half of the 18th century, is back on the field of performance at the Pera Museum after 300 years. The Fasıl Ensemble, which brings ancient artifacts to the present day by considering the artistic understanding of different historical periods, will meet with art lovers for the first time at the “Fasl-ı Rast: In the Tradition of the Forgotten Chapter of the 20th Century” concert that will take place on Saturday, May 18, at the Pera Museum Auditorium.

The fasıl arrangements in Evliya Çelebi's Travel Book, which is one of the main sources describing the cultural life of the 17th century, and the fasils performed in palaces and in distinguished cultural environments, as detailed by Dimitri Kantemiroğlu in Kitabü İlmi'l-Musiki ala Vechi'l-Hurüfat, are part of this deep-rooted musical tradition. It contains important information about While explaining the elements of a chapter in the order in which they are performed, Kantemiroğlu shares information about the three types of the chapter. The part in which the chapters performed by the sazende and hanendes are explained also constitutes the starting point of the Fasıl Ensemble project. According to Kantemiroğlu's narration, first one or two peşrevs are played in the fasıl, the hanende taksim (reads gazel) is followed by embroidery, snow and semai. Finally, after the saz semai is played, your hanende divides it again and the chapter ends. This musical order, which is quite enjoyable in terms of music, will be applied in the Fasıl Ensemble concert for the first time in 17 years, by including the works performed in the 18th and 300th centuries. Thus, a tradition from centuries ago will be carried to today's art environment and a forgotten musical understanding will be performed by contemporary musicians.

The concert “Fasl-ı Rast: In Search of the Forgotten Fasıl Tradition of the 18th Century” can be watched on Saturday, May 20, at 15.30 at the Pera Museum Auditorium. Before the concert, Fasıl Ensemble art director Harun Korkmaz will make a presentation on the stages of the fasil tradition in the history of Classical Turkish Music.
