Population growth, industrialization and intensive agricultural activities in the Gediz Basin, which is one of the 25 river basins in our country, create quantity and quality pressure on water resources. In addition, flood and drought disasters, the frequency of which has increased in recent years due to climate change, threatens the safety of life and property, and adversely affects both water resources and human activities.

General Directorate of Water Management in order to improve all water resources in the basin in terms of quantity and quality, to achieve good water status, to protect human health and ecosystem accordingly, to switch to risk management by reducing the effects of floods and droughts, to distribute the existing water potential among the sectors and to increase the level of welfare. “River Basin Management Plan, Sectoral Water Allocation Plan, Flood Management Plan and Drought Management Plan” prepared in the Gediz Basin was approved by the Water Management Coordination Board and entered into force. A more effective water management will be achieved by integrating these four plans, which were prepared at the basin scale and whose implementation is still ongoing, under the name of “Gediz Basin Action Plan”.​

Gediz Basin Action Plan, under the coordination of the Ministry; Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Industry and Technology, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, Ministry of National Education, Municipalities, OIZs, Water Sewerage Administrations, Special Provincial Administrations, Universities It was prepared in line with the participation and opinions of stakeholders such as industrial facilities and entered into force.

With the Gediz Basin Action Plan, it will be ensured that water pollution in the basin is prevented without wasting time and that the "good water situation" target determined for our water resources will be achieved, as well as the management of flood and drought events and the fair sectoral water allocation. Urban wastewater treatment, regular disposal of solid wastes, removal of industrial pollution, reduction of agricultural pollution with good agricultural practices, efficient and effective use of water, ensuring food security by considering the supply-demand balance, and negative effects of flood and drought in the entire basin where approximately 2 million of our citizens live. mitigation targets will be achieved.
