1955 – With the initiative of the Turkish Women's Union, it was decided to celebrate the second Sunday of May every year as Mother's Day. TKB chose Nene Hatun as the mother of the year. The first official recommendation for Mother's Day came from the American Julia Howe in 1872.
1960 - The Soviet Union announced that it had shot down the long-lost US spy plane, the U-2. This event, which exacerbated the Cold War, was called the U-2 Crisis.

1968 – In France, in anti-US demonstrations due to the Vietnam War, under the leadership of Daniel Cohn-Bendit, 30 thousand students rioted in Paris by erecting barricades after six students were arrested; Sorbonne University was closed.
1980 - Konstantin Karamanlis was elected President of Greece.
1981 – IRA militant Bobby Sands dies in prison in England at the end of his hunger strike. Sands was also a member of the UK Parliament.
1994 – Naim Süleymanoğlu broke the world record in 64 kg and won three gold medals at the European Weightlifting Championships held in the Czech Republic.
2000 – President of the Constitutional Court Ahmet Necdet Sezer was elected the 10th president of Turkey.
2005 – The Labor Party, led by Tony Blair, won the general elections in England for the third time.
2007 – Kenya Airlines Boeing 737-800 type passenger plane, which took off from Douala International Airport in Douala, Cameroon to go to Kenya's capital, Nairobi, crashed: 115 people died.
