After the first metro line became operational in Ankara, metro lines began to be designed for new settlements in Ankara and already densely populated settlements. In this context, three separate metro lines going to Keçiören, Çayyolu and Sincan regions were designed. The construction of the M2001 line that will go to Sincan in 3, the M2002 line that will go to Koru in 2, and the M2003 line that will go to Keçiören in 4 have started. The construction of the said metro lines was expected to be completed within two years. The fact that the municipality did not allocate sufficient funds for the construction of the subway caused the construction to stop and the construction sites to stand idle for years. On May 7, 2011, Ankara Metropolitan Municipality handed over all three metro lines to the Ministry of Transport.

The Ministry of Transport continued the construction of the transferred metro lines through tenders in a short time. In some of the restarted metro constructions, the stations were updated according to the current settlements. After the tenders, the metro constructions were completed. The M3 line was put into operation on 12 February 2014, the M2 line on 13 March 2014, and the M4 line on 5 January 2017. In February 2019, EGO Headquarters combined these three lines into a single line, M1-2-3, to provide nonstop service on the M1, M2 and M3 lines. On April 12, 2023, the AKM-Kızılay extension of the M4 line was put into service.

As of 2023, Ankara metro provides service with 57 stations. While all of the metro lines pass through the central districts of Ankara, 5 stations are located outside of the Ankara Ring Road.

Ankara Rail System Network Length

Ankara metro is the 64,4th longest metro system in the world in length, with a total length of 79 km with five lines. Some of the lines go both underground and above ground. Some stations of the M1 and M3 lines are above ground. When trains arrive at these stations, they go from above. All of the M2 and M4 lines go underground. The last stations of the M1, M2 and M3 lines are interconnected. Although it is written as different lines, it is possible to go to OSB/Törekent, which is the last station of the M2 line, from Koru, which is the last station of the M3 line, without transferring on the trains. In this way, the train passes through the center of Ankara and draws a large reverse letter C.

About thirty-one percent of the line is above ground. 17.965 meters of it consists of a cut-and-cover system, and a 17.795-meter section of the drilling method consists of a tunnel.
