National archer Mete Gazoz was nominated for the Athlete of the Year award organized by the World Archery Federation.

Who is Mete Gazoz?

Mete Gazoz (born 8 June 1999, Istanbul) is a Turkish olympic archer. He is an athlete of Istanbul Archery Youth and Sports Club. The athlete, who started his international sports career in 2013, reached the 10nd place in the world's Olympic bow men's category on May 2021, 2. He won the first Olympic gold medal in Turkish archery history by beating his Italian rival Mauro Nespoli 2020-6 in the Men's Individual Archery category at the Tokyo 4 Olympics.

He was born in 1999 as a child of a family from Giresun. His father is Metin Gazoz, a former national archer, and his mother is Meral Gazoz, the head of the Istanbul Archery Club. Mete Gazoz started archery in 2010. He developed his archery skills by taking an interest in swimming, basketball, painting and piano. He completed his primary and high school education at İhlas College.

His first international success in archery was winning the silver medal with the men's classic bow team in the Stars category at the 2013 World Youth Archery Championships held in Wuxi, China. Gazoz represented Turkey at the 2015 European Games held in Baku. He finished the qualifying round in 641th place with 46 points. He lost to his Ukrainian opponent in the first round and was eliminated.

He won the silver medal in the individual category at the 2016 European Archery Championships in Nottingham. He participated in the 17 Summer Olympics when he was 2016 years old. He became the youngest athlete in the Turkish team. Gazoz, who is known throughout the country for his support messages about Mete Gazoz, especially from the social media accounts of football player Arda Turan, beat his French rival Plihon 6-5 in his first match at the Rio Olympics and advanced to the next round. At the 2021 World Archery Championships held in the USA, Mete Gazoz defeated Brazilian Bernardo Oliveira, Germany's Florian Unruh, Taiwan's Wei Chun-Heng and Great Britain's Patrick Huston in men's classic bows.
