The Secret of the Building Not Destroyed in the Earthquake to be Implemented in Istanbul

Imamoglu Made Investigation in 'A Block'
İmamoğlu Investigated the Non-Destroyed 'A2 Block'

IMM President Ekrem İmamoğlu, 7.7 and 7.6 Kahramanmaraş, 6.4 earthquake centered in Hatay, Antakya Sümerler Neighborhood Municipality Cooperative Houses A2 Block, which came to the agenda, made investigations. Learning that the 'secret' of the building, which has survived despite 3 severe earthquakes, is the reinforcement work made with 'carbon fiber polymer' 13 years ago, İmamoğlu said, “We are looking for speed in Istanbul's dense building stock. Destroy, build, renovate, zoning rights, etc. The chaos both overlaps Istanbul, intensifies it as a population, and time is not enough. If we continue in the same way what has been done in 23 years, we cannot finish the renewal of Istanbul in 100 years.”

A1975 Block, located in the Municipality Cooperative Houses, the foundation of which was laid in Antakya Sümerler District in 3, was completely destroyed in the earthquake, and A1 Block was severely damaged. A2 Blok, on the other hand, survived the earthquakes of 7.7 and 7.6 in Kahramanmaraş, Pazarcık and Elbistan districts, and 6.4 in the center of Hatay Defne. The “secret” of A2 Blok was shared with the public through the narration of the residents of the building. While it was learned that the indestructible block was strengthened by using "fibrous carbon polymer" on its walls between October 2008 and March 2009, thanks to this method, which was tried for the first time, not a single person's nose bled during the earthquake.

DR. TORE: “WE STRENGTHEN FILLING WALLS WITH CARBON FIBER POLYMER”

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) President Ekrem İmamoğlumade inspections on the undestroyed block. İmamoğlu, Balıkesir University Civil Engineering lecturer Dr. Informed by Erkan Töre. Dr. Töre stated that the undamaged A2 Block was strengthened by METU and ITU, and the heavily damaged A1 Block was strengthened by a local engineering company, adding, “We are strengthening the infill walls with carbon fiber polymer, with the wall strengthening method developed in Turkey and included in the regulation. Thus, we influence the behavior of the carrier system. A transformation like curtain concrete is achieved. When we conducted internal inspections, we found that the reinforcement works were working correctly. Unreinforced sections in the building are in severely damaged condition. However, at the end of the day, the people living in the 2 buildings left the houses by their own means.

“WE ARE LOOKING FOR SPEED IN ISTANBUL'S INTENSIVE BUILDING STOCK”

Emphasizing that they are working hard for retrofitting in Istanbul, İmamoğlu said, “The buildings that were strengthened survived 3 earthquakes in a row. We are looking for a speed in Istanbul's dense building stock. Destroy, build, renovate, zoning rights, etc. The chaos both overlaps Istanbul, intensifies it as a population, and time is not enough. If we continue what has been done in 23 years, we cannot finish the renewal of Istanbul in 100 years. After 100, Istanbul's inventory will get old anyway. We need to come out with such a method that we need to take the issue to a completely different level in 10, 15 years," he said. İmamoğlu added that they will work on whether the aforementioned system can be applied in Istanbul as well.
