The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry started damage assessment studies in the field with the teams it formed right after the earthquake that affected 10 provinces in Kahramanmaraş. A team of 852 personnel, 470 of which are veterinarians and 1322 engineers, within the scope of Turkey's Disaster Response Plan (TAMP), which is within the body of the Provincial Directorates of Agriculture and Forestry, moved to the region from the first day to determine the damage and solve the problems of the farmers.

Acting in line with the demands from 10 provinces where the earthquake was effective, the teams made determinations about the tent and feed needs that could not be met by the farmers. In this context, in the first stage, tent shipments are made to the region by taking action to meet the need for 4 animal tents. Animal tents continue to be set up in places determined by Ministry teams.

Action was taken to meet the need for animal feed

As for the supply of animal feed, which is among the urgent needs of the farmers living in the earthquake zone, detection and distribution studies have been carried out since the first day. Ministry teams in the region started to distribute animal feed in an amount to meet the 10-day feed requirement per animal within the scope of determinations. The amount of animal feed sent to the region exceeded 1716 tons.

The process of collecting milk and purchasing animals that need to be slaughtered was also coordinated by the Meat and Milk Institution (ESK). The amount of milk collected so far has been 1164 tons.

Unclaimed or Unable to Care Animals Are Taken Under Protection

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumaklı made statements about the Ministry's actions for the farmers in the earthquake zone.

Stating that 750 tents were sent to the region for animals at the first stage and this number will be increased to 4 thousand, Yumaklı said, “Out of 4 thousand tents, 2 will be 50 square meters in size. Each of these has a capacity of 18 cattle and 32 sheep. The remaining 2 thousand tents have a capacity of 24 square meters and can accommodate 9 cattle and 16 sheep.” used the phrases.

Yumaklı emphasized that the production of animal tents continues rapidly and the number can be increased if deemed necessary.

Deputy Minister Yumaklı explained that the cattle and small cattle that belong to the earthquake victims who had to leave the region or that were left behind because they had no one to look after, were taken under protection by the General Directorate of Agricultural Enterprises (TİGEM) and all their needs were met.

Stating that they carry out all the works in coordination with AFAD, Yumaklı said, “The General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works, General Directorate of Forestry and other units started their activities by being dispatched to the region by planning machinery-equipment and personnel reinforcement from the first day. The number of personnel belonging to all units of our Ministry, which is currently participating in the studies, is 11 thousand 975, and the number of machinery-equipment is 4 thousand 419.” said.

Organizations Affiliated to the Ministry Also Mobilized

Çaykur, one of the subsidiaries of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, opened tea service vehicles and tea stands in the region.

The General Directorate of IHC also ensures that animals donated to the Turkish Red Crescent are turned into products and distributed to earthquake victims.

The General Directorate of Turkish Grain Board (TMO) organizes the aid to the earthquake region by flour, pasta, bulgur, pulses companies, federations and their affiliated associations, with the coordination of flour supply to the bread producers of the provinces in the disaster area and the nearby provinces that send bread to these regions, especially the public bread factories. .
