Passport
To go abroad by car, a valid Turkish passport is required. Passports must be valid for at least 90 days. The entry of a person with a passport shorter than 90 days into the country is under the initiative of the passport officer at the border.
It is not possible to exit from Turkey to Europe with a Republic of Turkey ID card. Citizens of Iran, Syria, Russia, and Azerbaijan countries residing in Turkey can travel to Greece and other EU countries via Turkey if they have the appropriate visa.
Valid Schengen Visa
Ordinary (burgundy) passport holders who are subject to a visa for travels up to 90 days are subject to a visa. Holders of special (green), service (grey) and diplomatic (black) passports can travel to all Schengen countries via Greece without a visa for up to 90 days.
If the burgundy passport holder has a single-entry Schengen visa, he/she can only enter Schengen countries via Greece by car. It is not possible to enter countries such as Romania, Bulgaria, Montenegro with a single-entry visa.
From which country should a Schengen Visa be obtained to go to Europe by car?
The countries that need a Schengen visa for individuals who want to tour Europe by car are determined by the travel plan. The rule that the Schengen visa application is made according to the first exit point of the individuals or the country where the maximum stay will be made; It also applies to individuals traveling by car.
Since Greece is the first country of departure for travels from Turkey to Europe, Greece Schengen visa applications can be made for travels from Turkey to Europe by car; If there is a country where you will stay longer than Greece, the application must be made through the country where you will stay the longest during the trip.
In addition to the documents to be submitted in the Schengen visa application for travels by vehicle, the green card insurance issued for the vehicle must be presented among the application documents.
Travel health insurance
Regardless of the type of passport, Turkish citizens who will travel to other Schengen countries via Greece are required to have a travel health insurance with a guarantee of 30.000 EUR covering their travel dates.
It is recommended to have the originals of this insurance policy in the vehicle. At the border controls, the passport police can check whether the insurance has been made.
Green Card Insurance
Green Card insurance is a mandatory document for all travels abroad by car. The average price for cars for 2023 is 54 EUR. Since the policy fees for commercial vehicles from Turkey are high, it can be cut to an average of 60 EUR over Bulgaria. Insurance policies can be cut for a minimum of 15 days and a maximum of 1 year. The most suitable policy prices can be reached through the VZM group.
The original policy of green card insurance must be in the vehicle. Photocopy is not accepted. Therefore, for the policy to be shipped, it should be cut off and shipped to the address at least 4-5 days before leaving the country.
Policies can also be issued at Kapıkule, İpsala and Dereköy border gates, however, waiting periods of up to 90 minutes may occur for policies issued at the border.
