New Settlement Areas Should Not Be Located On Fault Zones

On February 6, 2023, the 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Pazarcık above the center caused heavy loss of life, injury and destruction in settlements such as Gölbaşı, Pazarcık, Kahramanmaraş, Türkoğlu, Nurdağı, Islahiye, Hassa and Kırıkhan.

In cooperation with the AFAD Presidency, especially the General Directorate of MTA, and the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, areas that will protect our people from earthquake risks should be determined. In this regard, MTA General Directorate should take an active role in the selection of new settlement areas.

Şekeroba, one of the residential areas on the fault, is one of these areas. These settlement areas show that opening the top of the fault zones to settlement has very serious consequences. Restructuring of residential areas after earthquakes is discussed. While doing this, the fault zones must be cleared and our citizens living in these areas must be transferred to safe areas. For this purpose, especially the General Directorate of MTA, AFAD Presidency and the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change should cooperate to determine areas that will protect our people from earthquake risks. In this regard, MTA General Directorate should take an active role in the selection of new settlement areas. TMMOB Chamber of Geological Engineers is ready to give any contribution and support in this regard.
