One of the most important stages has been completed with the installation of the hydraulic tanks of the passive core flooding system in the 1st power unit of Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NGS).

For the installation process, 1 thick-walled stainless steel tanks with a total weight of 26,3 tons and a volume of 77 cubic meters were installed at 120 meters in the reactor building of the Akkuyu NGS 8st power unit. An aqueous solution of boric acid will be stored in these tanks when the power plant is put into operation. A heavy, self-propelled crawler crane was used for the installation using Open-Top technology from the open top of the reactor chamber.

Sergey Butckikh, First Deputy General Manager of Akkuyu Nuclear AŞ and Director of NGS Construction Works, said in his statement on the subject: “The construction works in the 1st unit are progressing according to the schedule. The construction of the passive core flooding system is another important step that brings us closer to the completion of Unit 1. The system in question is an integral part of the core cooling system and is one of the important elements of NGS's safety system. The passive flooding system operates without requiring personnel or power supplies.”

Construction and installation work at the Akkuyu NPP site continues at all main and auxiliary facilities, including the four power units, coastal hydrotechnical structures, power distribution system, administrative buildings, training center and NPP physical protection facilities.
