Final Declaration of Muğla Climate Change Workshop Announced

The final declaration of the workshop titled “Muğla Speaks on Climate Change” held by Muğla Metropolitan Municipality on October 27 has been published.

Workshop declaration impacts of climate change; cities and society, ecological systems and forest fires, agriculture and tourism. In the declaration, it was emphasized that cities are the areas that will be most affected by the negative effects of climate change such as drought, threat of food security, extreme meteorological events, disasters, forest fires and sea level rise.

The solution proposals of the final report of the workshop, in which determinations on global warming and climate change were made, were also included.

The statement prepared by the Metropolitan Municipality included the following statements:

“Greenhouse gases that cause global warming are largely caused by activities in industry, housing and traffic in cities. In order to increase the resilience of Muğla and its districts against the effects of climate change, an effective urban planning that takes into account adaptation to the climate should be adopted, and in this context, an urban growth that is balanced with nature and that protects natural and rural areas is ensured. Not creating urbanization pressure on rural and agricultural lands and protecting green areas are some of the important measures that will make Muğla resilient to climate change.”

“Climate change is a risk in terms of forest fires”

In the workshop declaration, it was emphasized that Muğla is at great risk in terms of forest fires in the coming years as a result of climate change.

In the declaration; “As a result of the increase in the frequency and severity of the effects of climate change, forest fires will be an important climate risk for our province in the coming years. For this reason, instead of responding to forest fires, which cause serious loss of biodiversity and natural assets, preventive measures should be taken by all relevant institutions in cooperation instead of responding to fire. In order to prevent forest fires in our province, fire risk maps and action plans should be prepared, and fire risk assessments should be made at the facilities to be built in forest areas. it was said.

“Mining sites are as dangerous as fires”

In the final declaration of the climate change workshop, it was stated that preventing the irreversible plunder of our forests, which are our natural assets, for energy and mining projects is at least as important as combating forest fires.

In the declaration, “Unfortunately, forest fires are not the only factor threatening forest areas, which are the most important greenhouse gas sinks of our province. Preventing the irreversible plundering of our forests for energy and mining projects, which is our most important natural asset that increases Muğla's resilience against the climate crisis, is at least as important as combating forest fires. Legislation should also be compatible with this target.” statements were included.
