Eye and Headache Can Be a Sign of Glaucoma

Anadolu Health Center Ophthalmology Specialist Dr. Arslan Bozdağ shared information about glaucoma, which is popularly known as eye pressure. Stating that glaucoma can be controlled with early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, Anadolu Medical Center Ophthalmology Specialist Dr. Arslan Bozdağ said, “The presence of glaucoma in the family, long-term cortisone therapy, intraocular inflammation, smoking, being over 40 years old, diabetes, high-low blood pressure, myopia or hyperopia, eye injuries and migraine may be risk factors for glaucoma. Regular doctor examination is very important for insidious progressive glaucoma. In case of sudden onset of eye and headache, a doctor should be consulted. made a statement.

Bozdağ said that glaucoma, which occurs as a result of insufficient drainage of the fluid due to the formation of structural obstruction in the channels that drain the intraocular fluid, and consequently the increase in fluid pressure in the eye, the rising intraocular pressure can cause the death of optic nerve cells by pressing on the optic nerve and damaging it.

Reminding that glaucoma can cause vision loss due to the increase in intraocular pressure to damage the optic nerve, Bozdağ said:

“In a normal eye, the inner fluid of the eye is constantly produced and emptied out of the eye in a balanced way. Thus, intraocular pressure remains at normal levels. If the intraocular fluid produced is prevented from draining out of the eye, the intraocular pressure increases and glaucoma occurs. In general, eye pressure below 20-21 millimeters Hg is normal. However, even at lower blood pressure, glaucoma can be seen depending on the eye structure of the person.

Routine eye exam is important

Bozdağ said that acute glaucoma can cause sudden onset of eye and headache, severe redness in the eye, and sudden decrease in vision. Over the years, it first narrows the marginal visual fields and finally irreversibly destroys the central vision. It is mostly detected during routine eye examination.” he said.

Early diagnosis is important in glaucoma.

Reminding that laser treatment can be performed in eyes with stubborn glaucoma that cannot be controlled with medication, Bozdağ said, “Intraocular glaucoma surgeries may be required in much more severe cases. It is not possible to prevent glaucoma because glaucoma is a structural disease. However, with early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, it is possible to prevent damage to the optic nerve.” used the phrases.
