ESHOT General Directorate will both save money and protect the environment with its new application that prevents the idle time of buses at the last stop, transfer and garages. Thanks to the driver trainings and the automatic engine shutdown system, it is expected to save approximately 2023 million TL in fuel in 60. In this way, 6 tons of carbon dioxide emissions will also be prevented.

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality ESHOT General Directorate has reduced the carbon footprint of the city while saving fuel costs of buses with its efforts to increase energy efficiency. Within the scope of the studies carried out within ESHOT, the running times at idle (the idle state of the engine) were greatly reduced as a result of the fleet management and tracking system in order to reduce the fuel consumption, the price of which is increasing day by day.

29 million TL savings in six months

First of all, awareness raising and awareness activities were carried out for drivers to reduce idling waiting times in the last stop, transfer and garage areas. With the newly developed system, the automatic engine shutdown system, which will allow the buses to run idle for a maximum of 5 minutes, has been put into use. Thus, in the second half of 2022, a decrease of approximately 50 percent was observed in idle working rates. A total of 1 million 200 thousand liters of fuel consumption was prevented and approximately 29 million TL of savings was achieved.

Atak: "Tracking system has been established"

ESHOT Deputy General Manager Eser Atak said, “There is a global climate crisis. One of the most important reasons for this is the excessive increase in the amount of carbon released into the atmosphere. Reducing this is very important. Everyone and every institution has a responsibility in this regard. As ESHOT General Directorate, we work with this awareness. We aimed to reduce idle times in order to reduce carbon emissions from our buses as much as possible. We have minimized idle times at end stops, hubs and garage spaces. We follow this up from on-board computers,” he said.

The target is 60 million TL and cleaner air

Stating that the system will reduce carbon emissions as well as fuel costs, Atak said, “We have informed our driver friends, who use vehicles with heavy idling, about this issue. Along with the project, we also developed an automatic closing system. Even if the driver forgets, the vehicle automatically stops after 5 minutes at the most. Thus, we have saved 50 percent since the second half of this year. We foresee 2,5 million liters of fuel savings next year. When we calculate the current liter price of fuel, we will save approximately 60 million TL. At the same time, we will prevent about 6 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. This is a figure equivalent to the oxygen provided by a forest of approximately 700 thousand trees,” he said.

“We ask for understanding towards our drivers”

Eser Atak, who also called on the people of Izmir to be sensitive to this meaningful project initiated by ESHOT, concluded his words as follows: “Especially in summer, at the last stops and transfer centers, while the vehicle is waiting, our passengers want the air conditioners to stay on to keep the vehicle cool, and the heating systems to work in winter. wants. This requires the engine to stay on for an extra amount of time before the vehicle moves. Therefore, there is a serious fuel and resource consumption in total. We need to get ahead of this. We expect sensitivity from all our compatriots on this issue and we ask them to be understanding towards our drivers.
