Electric Sea Taxis Meets in Istanbul

IMM subsidiary Şehir Hatları A.Ş. launched 567 electric water taxis on the 5th anniversary of the historical Golden Horn Shipyard. “Haliç Shipyard, which had an annual commercial volume of 1 million liras when we received it, has now reached a commercial volume of up to one hundred 175 million liras,” said the IMM President. Ekrem İmamoğlu“Anyone who has seen the Golden Horn Shipyard before could not even imagine that this place would become like this. When you eliminate waste and abuse, we can see a rational process in every institution. This place is one of them. Now, Istanbul has a management like the Golden Horn Shipyard, which does not sacrifice its resources to waste, exploitation and profiteering, and acts with an understanding for the benefit of Istanbul and Istanbulites, and considering the public interest. After the ceremony, İmamoğlu also answered journalists' questions about the agenda.

Şehir Hatları A.Ş., a subsidiary of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB), produced an electric water taxi within the scope of the project of “decarbonization of the Istanbul sea”. An introductory meeting was held in the week of the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Historical Golden Horn Shipyard for new generation vehicles that will reduce fuel consumption by 567 percent compared to existing water taxis. At the end of the ceremony in which 5 electric boats were launched, in memory of the 567th anniversary of the Golden Horn Shipyard; IMM President Ekrem İmamoğluThe cake was cut by Ertan Yıldız, IMM President Advisor responsible for affiliates, and Sinem Dedetaş, General Manager of City Lines. Speaking at the introductory meeting held in a workshop in the shipyard, İmamoğlu said, “It is a process that started in 1455, being in a magnificent historical area is a really special situation. The oldest living shipyard in the world, standing tall for 567 years. It is important to protect, preserve and carry it into the future. From the time of Mehmet the Conqueror to the present, it has both resisted time and sometimes protected itself against some profiteering thoughts. Sometimes it stood by the contributions of very sensitive and meticulous people. We looked at this historical shipyard as our eyes and carried it to a new era in this area, which was thought to be liquidated when we took office and to evolve into another dimension with different ideas.”

“WE ACHIEVED WITH 1 MILLION LIRA TRADING VOLUME, WE INCREASED IT TO 175 MILLION LIRA”

Emphasizing that they have revived the historical shipyard with the cooperation of IMM and the General Directorate of City Lines, İmamoğlu said, “The facility, which had an annual commercial volume of 1 million liras when we received it, has now reached a commercial volume of up to one hundred 175 million liras. Today, we have reached the capacity to build 50 composite passenger ships and 20 tugboat pilot boats. We realized the historical Paşabahçe Ferry together and new ones are on the way”. Stating that they will introduce the shipyard area to art apart from design and production, İmamoğlu gave the good news that the area they restored will be put into the service of Istanbulites in a short time. Noting that they have added 45 new generation hybrid boats to the existing 5 sea taxis, İmamoğlu said, "The most important principle here is: It is a matter of managing a good process under the leadership of a hardworking team that knows what they are doing, focused on production and solutions, and of course, our esteemed General Manager." .

“It took us 1 year to remove OLD SEA TAXI”

Expressing that they are happy to reverse a process in which employees are also unhappy due to the old inactive structure, İmamoğlu said:

“Today, our friends have activated a change from what we did before in the production of sea taxis. We are proud that our project has turned into an environmentally friendly and hybrid water taxi and electric boats have landed in the sea. Here, it has a known effect on fuel consumption and has an environmentalist dimension regarding carbon emissions. We are doing a very valuable job in every aspect. It is now a team with a target of over 200 thousand passengers per year. It's a fleet now. You know, this has been implemented before. It was trash. And the boats that turned into garbage were left to rot on the shores of the Golden Horn for years. It took a year to even remove them from there. But today it is not garbage. I am very happy that this process, which will serve our people in the sea and the Golden Horn, with its own production, with its stylish form, with its design befitting this historical Bosphorus and the Golden Horn, together with both electric and normal production, has come to an end.”

“THE OLD HALIC SHIPYARD CANNOT IMAGINE IT GOING TO BE THIS”

"Anyone who has seen the Golden Horn Shipyard before could not even imagine that this place would become like this," said İmamoğlu. This place is one of them. Now, Istanbul has a management like the Golden Horn Shipyard, which does not sacrifice its resources to waste, exploitation and profiteering, and acts with an understanding for the benefit of Istanbul and its residents, taking into account the public interest. They actually can't stand it for a bit. If they are jealous, I will be happy. Because jealousy - I don't understand the job of jealousy - but I think it motivates to do at least a little bit better. It's not jealousy. It has evolved into another dimension. For this reason, they resort to some practices that try to interfere with Istanbul, especially to ignore it, and even to harm the people of Istanbul. Sad. But we will pay absolute attention to justice, production, people, respect and care for the city in Istanbul. We will continue our journey in this direction. Istanbul is a very beautiful city in all aspects, a very special city. It really deserves very good things, its geography is beautiful, its culture is beautiful, first of all, its people are really beautiful. There have been ugliness and evil in this beautiful city, but it is temporary. We are struggling to banish all evil from here. We will continue to do so. Because evil and ugliness never take root here. There is such a spirituality here,” he said.

DEDETAŞ GAVE INFORMATION: “A 25 PERCENT REDUCTION WILL BE PROVIDED IN FUEL CONSUMPTION”

According to the information given by Sinem Dedetaş, General Manager of City Lines, in his speech; City Lines implemented the new generation water taxi project in 2021. Developed within the scope of the project, which continues to be renewed in line with the needs of the era, the “İBB Hybrid Sea Taxi” project; In the fight against global warming, it aims to be an alternative solution in which high carbon emissions are reduced for the sustainability of maritime transportation. With the fuel savings that new generation electric vehicles will provide, carbon emissions per boat will be significantly reduced. With the transition to the hybrid system, a 25 percent reduction will be achieved in the fuel consumption of existing diesel-powered water taxis. It is envisaged that 5 hybrid water taxis to be put into service in the first stage will reduce their annual carbon footprint of 284 tons. Each boat, as in the previous versions, has a capacity of 10 people.

NUMBER OF SEA TAXI INCREASED TO 50

The use of hybrid vehicles will be the same as existing water taxis. The new vehicles, whose interior design and hull design will be the same as the previous boats, will also be able to be booked 7/24 via the “İBB Sea Taxi” application. In the first phase, 5 hybrid sea taxis will be put into service. Thus, the number of sea taxis of IMM will increase to 50 in total. Hybrid water taxis, in addition to their environmentally friendly and low fuel consumption features; It has a "barrier-free boat design" that can be easily used by the disabled, families with baby carriages and cyclists. The new generation boats can easily approach every port, pier and point with its mobile ramp feature. The boat, which is not powered by an external charge from the hybrid system, will be able to work with both lithium batteries and fossil fuels. While the batteries are used while cruising, the generator will be activated if needed during the maneuver, and diesel fuel will be supplied.
