Young Voters Discussed: “Generation Z Antipolitics”

Enabling young people to vote in the upcoming elections EGİAD In the event, which also touched upon the work that can be done by business world organizations such as business world, the researches revealed that the young people mostly give up hope from politics, and the road map that can be followed for the young people to go to the polls and regain their political hope was determined. Drawing attention to the fact that young voters under the age of 30 mostly give up hope from politics, it has been pointed out by the researches, “The field of politicians is to give hope to the youth, but as a result of the researches, it has been revealed that the young people are reluctant and hopeless to go to the ballot box and cast their votes. There should be activities that can be done so that young people realize their political responsibilities and bring their political views to the ballot box. NGOs have a responsibility in this regard. Publishing a declaration on this subject and sharing it with political parties may be one of the roadmaps that can be followed.

At the board meeting, where Turkey Report Director Can Selçuki's assessment of the voter profile of Generation Z was also included, the issue was discussed and discussed. Citing the research conducted with 18 young people between the ages of 30-3 across Turkey, Selçuki emphasized that three main findings were reached and said, “First of all, young people are not aliens. There is a presumption in the definition of Generation Z that it is very different from the general society. But this is not true. They differ sharply from other segments due to the digitality of their growth period, but when we look at their problems and demands, we see that there is not a big difference. Our codes are actually the same with our young friends who went through the same cultural education. These young people are also not apolitical, but anti-politics. What does antipolitics mean, they never trust the institutions and actors of current politics. Because in the last period, politics did not give them anything it promised. It didn't give a better education, it didn't offer a better life. When you look at it now, they start their lives with a serious debt. They have a very serious foreign demand. Now when we look at all these, it would not be right to say that they are antipolitical, but we can say that they are antipolitics. In other words, they are against the political establishment. Since politics has already lost trust in the world, we see that civil society has come to the fore. When we evaluate all these, what does it mean for Turkey? As the concept of anti-politics spreads to the generations who will vote in the future, young people become open to populist discourses. First of all, it is necessary to change the rhetoric for young people between the ages of 3-18 instead of the Z generation. It is necessary to understand that the problems related to all segments of society, such as life and livelihood, are also their problems. There are actually opportunities to engage young people in politics, to convince them that politics can produce solutions to their problems, and to renew their faith in the system. Civil society has a role to play here. Actually, NGOs are doing their job, it is the political institution that is not doing its job here. All political parties have youth institutions, but there are no individuals to be champions of it. It is difficult to include those individuals in politics because of belligerent rhetoric and corruption rhetoric. For example, you should make an animal activist, an environmental activist a vice president somewhere. Politics needs to get out of its comfort zone and loosen its administrative strings. There are 30 million voters between the ages of 18-30. That's 15 percent of the 60 million total voters. It is a very important ratio for brands in both politics and economy. However, such radical moves must be made in order to awaken the politically dormant youth. Otherwise, anti-politics will become layer by layer in society. This situation poses a problem that will create a populist surge that poses a risk not only for this election but also for future elections and generations.”
