A Call from Soyer to the People of Izmir Regarding the Buca Prison Area

Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç Soyermade a call to the people of Izmir to open the Buca Prison land for construction in line with the plan prepared by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change. President speaking in the former Buca Prison area Tunç Soyer, emphasizing the public land, said, "Let's not let this place drown in concrete together."

Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç Soyer, spoke on the land of Buca Prison, which was demolished by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and wanted to be opened for construction with the zoning plans. Underlining that the area is public land, the President Tunç Soyer“After the destruction of Buca Prison, an extraordinarily large area emerged. We have a very clear request. We want this area to become a recreation area, a green area for Buca. We do not expect anything else. This was public land. But they did something, they turned this place into private property and they are trying to gain a commercial interest by opening that private property to housing and commerce. We don't want any of these. It's all concrete piles. Thousands of people living in these buildings have nowhere to breathe. This will be a park where these thousands of people will breathe. We will do whatever is necessary for that," he said.

“We expect you to be with us”

Making a call to the people of Izmir, President Soyer said, “We invite all Izmir people to stand by us and contribute to the voice of this demand. This is a very just demand, a very just cause. We expect them to be with us in this case. I make a call to everyone who loves this country and knows the value of meeting with nature. Let's not allow the Buca Prison area to be privatized, commercialized, drowned in buildings and concrete.”

What happened during the Buca Prison process?

After serving 62 years, Buca Prison was evacuated by the 30 October Izmir Earthquake and demolished by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change. Thus, 69 thousand square meters of empty public space emerged in the center of Buca. After the zoning plans prepared by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change paved the way for construction in the area, the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality objected to the plans and submitted a petition to the Izmir Regional Court of Justice.
